i think often about how important my library is to me — the thousands of books in my home and all the books and poems and texts and articles and papers i’ve read over the decades. every single piece of info i’ve absorbed from those pages is part of the dataset that helps me generate my analog, 100% human writing, and none of it was ingested into my mind or heart with explicit consent, other than the fact that they were published, and offered up for public consumption and to become part of cultural discourse. writers and artists have always been asked to cite their formative and most profound influences. on a technical level, and speaking on the text side, even if an author has had dozens of their books ingested into a base model with billions of parameters, the net influence of their specific tone and style and vocabulary on any given output is incredibly small (as i was discussing last week on a @PENamerica panel with human-computer interaction designer and expert on language models katy ilonka gero). the base model is using that data to understand the foundational and averaged mechanics of language, not to write a short story in the style of XX author. all this said, it’s totally possible to create models where only consenting authors opt in. there are so many better ways forward.
Very significant exchange thread worth reading among @refikanadol @BlueBeam9611 @Rahll concerning the upcoming #generative_art auction @ChristiesInc. As a collector of such art myself, I agree that it is very important that artists be fairly compensated for their copyrighted works used in the training models and strongly suspect the signatories to this letter have a point that not enough progress has been made in that regard. At the same time, the specific details matter and I believe Refik and BlueBeam when they say my own recently acquired Yawanawa piece was compliant with that principle. And though this is a very good discussion to have (as @sashastiles notes), we need not paint great works (or artists) with a broad brush here. I, for one, am comfortable and will be buying. And maybe that sharp visual commentary in the comments below by @beeple will be added to the sale last minute and attract a few bids!
This is so funny :) majority of the artists in the project specifically pushing and using their own datasets + their own models! This is the basic problem of entire art ecosystem, results of lazy critic practices and doomsday hysteria driven dark minds. BUT — future is bright ;)
