School of Rock w/ #GeoDan cont.."Here we see 3 orders of interference colors-Serpentine, w/low birefringence(bfg) gives off 1st order colors of black & grey. Phlogopite w/ higher bfg gives off bright 2nd order colors. Carbonate, w/ high bfg gives off more pastel 5th order colors.

Thurs School of Rock w/ #GeoDan! "Checking out a phlogopite x-tal w/ poikilitic texture; it shows 2nd order birefringence (colorful) & has x-tallized around & encased perovskite & monticellite x-tals (opaque & pale grey) in this #kimberlite groundmass. FOV 1.5mm PP & XPL".
School of rock w/ #GeoDan continued: The smaller olivine phenocrysts are more euhedral with defined crystal shapes and unbroken as they crystallized directly form the kimberlite melt either on ascent or upon emplacement.

#GeoDan goes back to #Naujaat for this #ThinSectionThursday on melt segregation. Groundmass minerals "Gms" are x-talizing in blobs of phlogopite (lt brn) perovskite (blk) & olivine "Olv" (grn). Carbonate "Cbt" rich fluid x-talized in space b/w the larger Olv forming Cbt flood.
#GeoDan says "Chromite in thin section "TS" from Anchor #Kimberlite, Lac de Gras; in groundmass of olivine & carbonate; thick rim is rounded from ascent from the mantle; 2mm FOV in PPL & XPL. An important kimberlite indicator mineral. Often mistaken for Ilmenite outside of TS.
