#Europe51 (1952) : An important neorealist drama for Italian cinema; quite depressive and unconventional for others. I am a huge fan of Roberto Rossellini for making the classic neorealist trilogy with #RomeOpenCity (1945), #Paisan (1946), and #GermanyYearZero (1948), but somehow his collaborations with Ingrid Bergman (my forever Casablanca girl) haven't impressed me. I have seen Stromboli (1950), which wasn't anything great, and today I saw Europe '51, which isn't anything great either. Bergman was a curse for him or what? This is again an Italian neorealist drama that doesn't make much sense as far as social awareness is concerned. I can understand why this film is important for Italian cinema, especially for the time it was made. The post-War scenario in Rome must have been depressive for many, especially women. The film represents one of those society women as the leading character. Irene Girard's son tries to commit suicide and survives, but soon dies. How did he die? We don't know. Her friend Andre tells her that it might be because of society, but how? He tells her about parents who couldn't make money for the son's treatment, but how is that relatable to Irene or her son, who are shown to be quite rich? I started disconnecting with the film right here, and it kept getting more distant afterwards. The mental asylum, Irene's idea of salvation and helping people—suddenly we have the principles of Christianity, and her husband also alleges her of having an affair. Everything was looking scattered. It wasn't just fitting together. Thankfully, there were some good dialogues after every 15 minutes or so, and most of them were long. They describe humanity, social work, and humanitarian work very well. The ideas of depression and mental status are what bothered me the most. Ingrid gives a powerful performance in the slow-paced drama skillfully directed by Rossellini. But I, as a fan, expected a better film from Rossellini. #RobertoRossellini born 1906 (happy birthday fella) made #RomeOpenCity genuinely one of the greatest #movies ever (part of war trilogy that incl's the also absolutely stunning #GermanyYearZero) style called #neorealism dunno bout that but are definitely must see #films. top stuff
