Leopard seals are best known for eating big (cute) prey, incl other seal species & penguins (so many penguins). But leopard seals also eat smaller prey, including fish & krill. #takeoverNSF #GlobaLeps

What do we mean by samples?
Samples refers to any tissue that comes from a leopard seal – from hair and whiskers to poop and pee! Around here, poop is like liquid gold and results in some extreme happy dancing! 💩 #GlobaLeps

But to learn more about the genetic diversity of #Leposeals, we need more data. We are analyzing 100s of existing samples and traveling to unsampled areas around the Southern Ocean to collect more. #GlobaLeps #takeoverNSF
One of the students working on the #GlobaLeps project, @AronaBender, mapped mitochondrial DNA sequences from #LepoSeals and found that seals share “last names” (or mtDNA haplotypes) between two sampling locations! #takeoverNSF
