Today at #UNGA81, EAM @DrSJaishankar co-chaired the inaugural meeting of the Group of Friends on Safety & Security of Shipping & Seafarers (#GoFonS4) with Liberia FM @NyantiSara.
India supplies one of the world’s largest pools of seafarers. Liberia hosts the world’s largest shipping registry. Together they have pulled in major ship-owning nations, flag states and crew-supplying countries.
PM @narendramodi’s BRICS proposal — a Seafarers Emergency Support Network linking maritime authorities and embassies for distress alerts, medical help, family contact and evacuation — is the practical next step.
80% of world trade moves by sea. Attack the ships, and you attack food, fuel, fertiliser and finance.
Close ranks. Deter the attacks. Protect the mariners.

Commercial ships and seafarers have been attacked again and again in the Gulf, Red Sea, Black Sea and other waters.

These attacks disrupt global commerce and treat mariners as expendable. That is indefensible. They must stop.

يسرّني أن أشارك في رئاسة الاجتماع الافتتاحي لـ«مجموعة أصدقاء سلامة وأمن الملاحة البحرية والبحّارة»، إلى جانب وزيرة خارجية ليبيريا سارة بيسولوو نيانتي، وذلك في إطار #GoFonS4 #UNGA81.
✅ أكدتُ أن الملاحة التجارية
والبحّارة تعرضوا لهجمات متكررة في الخليج والبحر الأحمر والبحر الأسود ومناطق أخرى خلال الأشهر القليلة الماضية.
✅ أشرتُ إلى أن هذه الهجمات تعرقل حركة التجارة البحرية، وأودت بحياة أبرياء، بمن فيهم مواطنون هنود.
✅ شددتُ على أن الاضطرابات الناجمة عن هذه الهجمات أدت أيضاً إلى بقاء البحّارة على متن السفن لفترات طويلة، وتأخر تبديل أطقم السفن وإعادتهم إلى أوطانهم، وانفصالهم عن أسرهم، وما يترتب على ذلك من معاناة وضغوط نفسية.
✅ أكدتُ الحاجة إلى تعزيز التعاون الوثيق والأقوى بين المجتمع الدولي، من أجل توحيد الصفوف وردع هذه الهجمات.
✅ أوضحتُ أن دولة رئيس الوزراء السيد ناريندرا مودي اقترح، خلال قمة بريكس الأخيرة، إنشاء «شبكة دعم طارئة للبحّارة»، يمكن أن تربط بين السلطات البحرية وسفارات الدول المعنية، بما يتيح تسهيل إرسال نداءات الاستغاثة، وتوفير المساعدة الطبية، والتواصل مع الأسر، ودعم عمليات الإجلاء.
وتُعدّ هذه خطوة إيجابية اليوم نحو رؤيتنا لجعل #GoFonS4 منصة شاملة تجمع الدول الأعضاء الرئيسية المالكة للسفن، والدول التي تضم أكبر عدد من سجلات السفن، والدول التي توفر أكبر عدد من البحّارة.

✅ Pointed out that such attacks disrupt maritime commerce and have cost innocent lives, including of Indian nationals.
✅ Emphasized that the disruption from attacks has also led to prolonged confinement of seafarers on board, delayed crew changes & repatriation, separation from families, and psychological distress.
✅ Stressed that there is a need for stronger and closer cooperation between the international community in order to close ranks and deter such attacks.
