Gloucester follows #Goeben as closesly as possible & was fired upon by the battle cruiser when she got to close. Milne would later order Gloucester to disengage still convinced that Souchon would turn west & ordered Troubridge to head south but to avoid "Superior Force"
Jackie Fisher would later say that Milne: "had no excuses whatever for not surrounding Messina with all his entire force right round the harbour mouth - close up! As if international law mattered a Damn! and the Italians would have loved him forever!"
#Goeben
News would later arrive to Milne that #Goeben and Breslau had arrived at Messina. He had to move his vessels as quickly as possible but staying far enough away from Italian teritorial waters to avoid provoking them.
A water pipe burst in #Goeben's boiler room scalding several men to death but the orders held and by 7.37pm Milne recieved the following transmission
"Goeben out of sight now, can only see smoke, still daylight."
On #Goeben Souchon ordered more speed. The tired boilers were fired into full pace. Stokers worked tirelessly in the heat on an already hot day to get the fires as hot as possible. As they flaked from heat exhaustion they were moved to the deck to recover & other crew tookover
At 10:30 am the the Indomitable & Indefatigable passed #Goeben & Breslau with both forces training guns at each other unsure if they should fire or not but with Germany & Britain not yet at war they passed without incident but the two RN ships began to chase the German ships
