Just drying the new wings.... #GrowingMonarchs
Although this is the time of year when the predatory wasps no longer need protein for their young ones - they ignore the caterpillars and turn back to nectar. So need to focus on making sure there is lots of good for the hungry caterpillars! #GrowingMonarchs
When I left, there was one butterfly - came back 60 minutes later and WHOA. #GrowingMonarchs
The "monarch garden" ended up being rather large - > 60 chrysalises! Butterflies are popping out now - yes, I know "eclose" is the correct term but "popping out" seems apt when it happens this fast in the heat. ๐ฅฐ#GrowingMonarchs
The collection is growing fast. But wasps do not seem to be a problem, so I won't being any more caterpillars inside - I don't think they need the protection. A neighbour said that a mite has been released for wasp control but I can't find anything about that. #GrowingMonarchs
It's tough being a new monarch in winter. She's healthy - & I found her some sun a few days ago. I have 2 more now. There is no way they can survive outside just now, so holding them for a bit and hoping I can find a brief spell of vaguely clement weather....#GrowingMonarchs
Found some more chrysalises hanging on the house, and one on an ornamental owl... #AsYouDoIfYouAreAMonarchCaterpillar #GrowingMonarchs
I thought they might run out of food but the caterpillars did ok while I was away. #CollectingChrysalises #GrowingMonarchs
Just arrived. Welcome to the world, little one. #GrowingMonarchs
The swan plant (milkweed) nursery - seedlings have sprouted everywhere! #GrowingMonarchs
A friend sent me a picture of her "caterpillar city". ๐#GrowingMonarchs
Gold rush at our house! These guys ate a whole plant in a few days time, and now nibbling on the same poor leaf. #GrowingMonarchs
Today is quite cold but is going to be sunny. So I've just now put them in a nice spot of early morning sun - I'm sure they will get away safely later in the morning. #GrowingMonarchs๐
In cooler weather, new monarchs will deliberately shiver to warm up. She got away later in the day - a big, healthy girl. ๐#GrowingMonarchs @saunieindiego
Just arrived in my mailbox from a friend - a lovely #WinterMonarch. She made a short hop to her shoulder before leaving. #GrowingMonarchs. ๐
As it gets colder I have had a few caterpillars inside at times. They sometimes go wandering when they are ready to hang up. This one got away from me and now I have a guest on the window frame. ๐คฃ #GrowingMonarchs
Because there are so many sad things in the world, here is a new autumn monarch doing wing exercises. Getting tougher for the little critters as the temperature drops... #GrowingMonarchs
This time of year I like to time monarch release. The weather is unpredictable, and new monarchs do not like the cold and wet. A good collection of #ButterfliesOnSticks #GrowingMonarchs @saunieindiego
