September 24 is Gonsui-ki. It is a day to remember a haiku poet who lived in the same era as #MatsuoBasho and moved between the poetry circles of #Edo and #Kyoto. Though less famous than Basho, he helped drive the reform of #Haikai poetry from within.
Gonsui-ki is the memorial day of #IkenishiGonsui, a haikai poet of the early to mid #EdoPeriod. Gonsui died on the 24th day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar in 1722 (the 7th year of the Kyoho era), at the age of 72. He was born in 1650 in #Yamato (present-day #NaraPrefecture); his given name was Noriyoshi, and he was commonly known as Hachirobe. He also used several pen names, including Kenshi, Shitoken, Rakkado, and Hokado. Influenced by his grandfather and father, he took to haikai from an early age and became a disciple of the Kyoto poet #MatsueShigeyori.
After moving to Edo around 1676, he associated with rising young poets such as Matsuo Basho, #ShiinomotoSaimaro, and #TakanoYuzan, and was active in compiling anthologies. In Edo, he was active as a poet of the #DanrinSchool before gravitating toward the #ShofuStyle. After moving to Kyoto in 1682, he traveled on foot through #Hokuetsu, #Ou, #Saigoku, and #Kyushu, and once he settled down he became one of the leading figures of the Kyoto poetry world. His verses are described as sensory, sensual, and aesthetic, and together with Basho and others he contributed to the reform of the poetry scene. He was also active as a judge of #Zappai (popular comic verse).
His compilations include "#EdoShinmichi" (1678), "#EdoJanoSushi" (1679), "#EdoBenkei" (1680), "#AzumaNikki" (1681), "#KyoNikki" (1687), and "#Miyakoburi" (1690). The characters for "Edo" and "Kyo" that run through these titles seem to trace the very path Gonsui walked. Today, try opening a collection of Edo-period haikai at your local library and looking for Gonsui's verses. Read side by side with Basho's poems, the differences between two sensibilities that breathed the air of the same era will quietly come into view.
