My friend was in there a couple of years ago. When Raab brought in the rules re trans prisoners it was that no intact male would be housed in a women's prison and no male convicted of violence regardless of whether or not had had SRS. In reality, the trans id men in Downview, had better facilities than the women (en-suite cells) and the deal was that they could use the facilities like gym, library etc but not when the women prisoners were present. They also had to be accompanied at all times by a prison officer, some were so violent they were accompanied by two officers. This is hugely demanding on already scarce staff resources. Inevitably that didn't last long. My friend was disciplined for 'misgendering' when one of them entered the library alone when the women were in there. She shouted out 'he shouldn't be in here' and drew the staff librarian's attention to a man being present. Downview is a women's prison, the special wing should be used as a mother and baby unit or as a reward for well behaved prisoners.

They'll tell you that 'E' Wing at Downview is a fully segregated wing for trans women - it's not. There are violent men in 'E' Wing & they mix with the women, some of the most vulnerable women in society - many abused by men. Men should be in men's prison...however they identify.
