In 1940, the Royal navy experienced one of its worst disasters. The carrier, HMS Glorious and her two destroyer escorts were caught by the German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau on the open sea. After a two hour battle, the Glorious and her escorts were at the bottom of the sea and a total of over 1500 men had lost their lives.
The mystery is why HMS Glorious and the two destroyers were sent on ahead of the rest of the fleet. It would appear that the captain of the Glorious was keen to get back to Scapa Flow, so as to be part of the court martial of his senior aviator, with whom he had clashed. This captain was probably the wrong choice for this command, as he had no aircraft carrier experience. This was amply demonstrated when on this return trip he refused to have any planes in the air and the Glorious was sauntering along at 17 knots. In doing so, hardly following carrier protocol.
The Admiralty also sealed the records of the Glorious sinking for 100 years (make your own mind up there) and have stuck to the line that the Glorious was short of fuel ever since. That reason has been thoroughly debunked but still the silence.
Obviously once confronted by the two German battlecruisers who outranged them on guns, it was only going to end one way. The HMS Glorious saga is a debacle from top to bottom, even with the Admiralty getting advance warning from Naval Intelligence on the whereabouts of the two German ships and ignoring it.
