Grandfather said something that's bothered me my whole life since, but father wouldn't talk about it. Granddad said, "Boy, the dudman aren't to keep things away. He's to keep things in and stop them gettin out."

Aye we'll see them soon, the little brown ones. Grandmother said there was a spring, once, where they didn't hear the dunnocks, were the worst year, terrible things happened. Wouldn't say more.
We have to hear the dunnocks. That's how it is.

I were a boy, I walked past the window, heard words, it was a play on the wireless. All I heard was a man saying, loud - "the land, the patient, outraged land" - I've never forgot.
I hear the words all the time when I look at this land.

Elephant footprints in the snow? In the war, the horses were gone. They had to put the circus animals to work. Elephant worked here, were old, she died and had to bury her. She walks, sometimes. Makes a change from cloven hoof tracks, and that.

Oh, it's not just headless horses and knights clanking about and ladies in white. Our ghosts are from our own.
Certain nights, there's the tractor goes up and down that back field - can't ever see who's driving it, though. Not as if I'd want to.

That pond - it's best left alone. It's where the horse is, the one's meant to be what the Vicar put a troubling ghost in, back when.
Then they drove the horse into the pond, see.
Just best not see the horse. If you do, pretend you didn't.

Older ones didn't want the rail. Said it would take people off the land. But when it came - them screaming beasts of iron and smoke and steam! Some said they took souls to feed them; things happened. Not ever as said in the papers, you know.

That pond, yes, it's well to stay away. Clear as a bell, the voices. From under the water. You don't want to hear them say your name. Best just stay away and don't give them the chance. It's like they smell you.

Depends I s'pose, on your house. Some go with the white rabbits but I know of some that say white hounds, or owls, or white crows as the first words of the year.
Depends what you feel is there watching.

Bad enough the tree got blew apart by lightning, gave us a hell of a scare. But the face that sometimes you can see, that's the worse thing. Comes and goes and always seems it's just before someone passes, it shows up. Nasty, really.

Don't mind winter. Soil needs cold and warm both. Those days with frost that hard it cracks under yer boot, can feel the cold doing somethin' in the earth.
Can smell it.
Dunno what, but it does somethin'.

Scarecrow! Scarecrow! Stand up straight!
Children! Children! Watch and wait!
If you let the scarecrow fall
You will die here one and all!

Long time back, some took the birds for a family name. Us Dunnocks, the Hawfinches, the Bramblings, some others. We see the flocks and that's us, see. All the olders, right there. Keeps us rememberin'.

Oh that lot! Thought us land folk ripe for talk of soil and rights. But some had a drink, see, all came out, what they really were. Oh how we saw them off! No fascists in this County. Not then. Not ever.

Every farm with a shearin' shed had a story of a child suffocated in a wool press. Always it were on another farm though, always twenty-so year back, always were they never could think of the names

The edge field, two acre. Grew bones and stones. Every beast, it sickened. Crops died. County asked to put on a pylon and grass grew. We know a ground will always want what it wants. But that? Odd, aye.

'Were the big combines changed it all, work of so many men. But were things to awe. Some took to them strange-like, gatherings at dark, and that.
Accidents what weren't. Said, the machines asked it.'
