(5) --> @hssonline + @SocHistTech at #hss18. Terrific Session "Bodies of Formalization": crime-scene photos, symbolic math, @mysdick on AI +'standard head' (@SIGCIS ), recording American dance: @profwernimont @clareskim, Whitney Laemmli, UCSD Kelly Gates https://t.co/SFgR4YBliQ
(1) Personal musings on @hssonline + @SocHistTech from SEA #hss18 (to come: STL #shot2018). Where is overlap in plenaries, activities, themes, sessions? Model in opening plenary/land acknowledgement https://t.co/9bRoGqPlne with @rosanna_dent @KimTallBear. https://t.co/UtXAQhbqVv
A conversation with a colleague at #hss18. She noticed a pattern: grad students come to her for emotional and intellectual support. But they choose a male PhD advisor. Yes. I know this. What to do? Grads are precarious and may need the real boost that male authority can offer.
I don't agree with everything said here, but the main point - that showing pristine natural habitats on TV is failing to spurn action to save them - is an important one. We need to engage more with the issues facing nature, not downplay or hide them. https://t.co/IfC15uKNmF
Just in time for #hss18, @BrownHist professor Lukas Rieppel's volume "Science and Capitalism: Entangled Histories" co-edited with William Deringer and Eugenia Lean is out!

Reflecting on #HSS18, the best talk by a grad student that I saw was by @fossilhistory (see chain of tweets). A gripping story, grounded in particulars, that forces us to think about the cultural and political context of science, and of #histsci. Plus, she brought an artifact!
Exchange between Jane Maienschein and @FossilHistory about how we as #histsci people need to think about our own role in these issues of intellectual property and control. When we go to these sites to do our studies, we too need to be sensitive to these issues. #hss18
I've had a few inquiries about my claim at #hss18/#psa2018 that #Darwin used narrative to reconceptualize #AdamSmith's idea of sympathy into an evolutionary account of morality. Cited the article where I lay it out, but didn't mention a (much shorter) blog post
What if Humans Were Raised Like Bees? Charles Darwin and the Evolution ofย Morality https://t.co/pCE3xnv1tX
Mt. Rainier blending into the clouds on my way back from #hss18

Daylight savings time + cross-continent jet lag + rainy grey day + recovery from busy (but wonderful) #HSS18 makes for quite the potent fatigue. #allthecaffeine
Congratulations to Professor @KaraSwanson, winner of @hssonlineโs 2018 Margaret W. Rossiter History of Women in Science Prize! #HSS18 #NUSLPride
An amazing honor to receive the Rossiter Prize for the History of Women in Science from @hssonline for my article about Clara Barton's fraught experience as a clerk in the 1850s patent office -- currently available for free download from @IsisJournal https://t.co/mAQFCNGYTu
After a great weekend at #HSS18, I'm glad to return to @LindaHall_org just in time to welcome 2 new fellows: Edward Halley Barnett (@Stanford) and Mira Kohl (@TulaneNews).
Read more about their research!

Without that gesture on her part, I likely would not be at #hss18 today. Thank you, Karen @UChicagoPress.
At #hss18 I finally got to thank Karen Merikangas Darling @UChicagoPress. Years ago now, I showed up to our first meeting with a baby strapped in a carrier. She spoke with me professionally and supportively. I did not realize at the time, how exceptional that must have been.
Honored to be part of post- #hss18 workshop โEthics, Settler Colonialism, and Indigeneity in the History of the Human Sciencesโ thanks to organizers Adam Warren and Julia Rodrรญguez
