Even superb fossil sites can't preserve every animal and plant. A great example is amber which, even though it gives us exciting specimens of arthropods and plants, can't yield large-scale animals. As such, we have to infer the greater habitat based on context clues.

Although fantastic for ancient food web-reconstructions, animal-to-animal behaviors rarely fossilize. Here's a stunning example when a belemnoid broke the back of its prey but ended up suffocating in the anoxic waters.

Enjoy a relaxing time on the Peruvian coast during the Miocene. This is based on the Pisco Formation lagerstätte renowned for its marine sloths, giant sharks, big penguins. This particular landscape is done by the talented @SerpenIllus

When reconstructing ancient habitats, it's important to look at the burial conditions. Not only can rocks tell us environments (e.g. lake vs ocean) but if the animals died and buried on site or were transported before burial.

As a former Park Ranger, I can't help but love @anomallite National Park-inspired posters of ancient habitats. The soft colors and the dynamic poses are great but I love the little touches like the "Time Travel Institute" logo.

Ancient Habitat Activity! These fossilized leaves are from a real fossil site. Based on these leaves, what was there habitat? Warm/Cold? Wet/Dry?
I'll come back later for the reveal but answer below! (note the first leaf is about the size of a person).

Richly detail, full of life and layered with age, I love @eawilloughby depiction of the Jehol Forest; an ecosystem from Early Cretaceous China. Definitely click on the link for a full appreciation of it.

Fossil-Lagerstätten are fossil sites that yield a superb quality and/or quantity of fossils. As such, they excel at reconstructing ancient habitats. They can preserve fragile species (like leaves/worms) and stomach contents (like this frog with ingested salamander)

Throughout #HabitatWeek, I want to feature paleoartists and their reconstructions of ancient habitats. First is this mural of the Miguasha formation by @MesozoicMuse. To read more about Miguasha and its various species check the link below

How do paleontologists reconstruct habitats? A good starting point is comparing what you know to what you observe. If you find a seashell fossil you can infer the habitat may have water. More fossils can add context if it was a river, beach, or ocean.

"What was the habitat?" This is a foundational question in paleontology. This week we'll compare and contrast the ancient to the modern and how paleontologists reconstruct food webs, scenery, and climate from a fossil site.

All classes also did an Earth Day-related activity, which were led by our many parent volunteers. A huge thank you to all our volunteers! #HabitatWeek @ASFS_VandP

Last week was our school’s annual #HabitatWeek and all classes spent time taking care of our gardens by weeding, watering, and planting native plants or veggies. @ASFSOnline @AsfsPta

#rockyshores are our next #coastal #habitat for #habitatweek and they are home to a huge variety of marine life🐟They are formed on coastlines with tough rock not easily eroded by the waves🌊and are characterised by features such as caves, arches, and stacks. #thesolent #sealife

We have some wonderful saltmarshes around the Solent including Lymington & Keyhaven, East Head, Chichester Harbour, Bunny Meadows near Warsash & Yarmouth, Newtown & Bembridge on the Isle of Wight💚 Where is your favourite? #saltmarsh #solenthabitats #habitatweek #thesolent

Today we are looking at saltmarsh🌱🌊 Saltmarshes are coastal wetlands that are periodically flooded & drained by the tides from the sea. They are populated by many different species of plants & animals uniquely adapted to living there 💚 #saltmarsh #wetlands #habitatweek
