Three Taliban officials who leaked news of an attack on Haibatullah Akhundzada to a journalist have been arrested.
One of them, in his final message yesterday, delivered a chilling claim: #Haibatullah Akhundzada had succumbed to his injuries and #died.
The Taliban is reportedly suppressing this information, fearing it would ignite a new wave of internal power struggles.
So the real question is, who is pulling the strings now? The Haqqanis or the Kandaharis?
The recent paralysis in decision-making, sudden appointments and reshuffles, including officials changed barely a week after being appointed, along with the unexpected outreach to India and the abrupt distancing from Pakistan, all suggest that something serious has happened, and the Taliban is trying hard to conceal it from the world.
🚨🚨 Several Afghan SM outlets are reporting that late last night, a bodyguard attempted to assassinate Taliban Emir Haibatullah Akhundzada, who is believed to have sustained injuries in the attack.
Interestingly, the assailant was not captured but was shot dead on the spot.
#ICC's recent arrest warrants for #Haibatullah #Akhundzada and Hakim Haqqani on charges of crimes against humanity are a symbolic gesture, and that is where it ends. The court has no enforcement power, so the move is not even intimidating.
The international community must stop treating the #Taliban as if they are still their 20th-century forebears, the Mujahideen, illiterate fighters from the mountains.
Today’s Taliban are young, connected, and media savvy; they write on social media, publish articles, even books, and shape their own narrative online and challenge the rest. They know international bodies like the ICC and how they operate.
Unless internal pressure within the #Taliban leads to genuine shifts, the ICC’s warnings will remain just that—a message.

In his address, Haibatullah reiterated his strong opposition to engagement with the international community. He declared that even if atomic weapons were used against him instead of the “Mother of All Bombs” (referring to the U.S. strike in Nangarhar’s Achin district against ISKP), he would not bow to external pressures. He emphasized his preference for death over yielding to international demands and condemned any attempts to interfere in his governance.
