Hand-eye coordination takes time to master. In fact, while it finds its roots in infancy, hand-eye coordination doesn’t fully develop until much later in childhood (between 6-9 years) - requiring maturity in visual processing, motor dexterity, and the development of both the eyeballs themselves and small muscles used to control them. All of which is to say that infants and toddlers - like this little one working to perfect her clap - can find it difficult to direct, time, and synchronize their movements. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t making steady progress. By six months of age infants typically begin grabbing for objects and passing them from one hand to the other. As they approach a year, they begin using their thumb and forefinger to create a pinching grip capable of picking up small objects like Cheerios. And between one and two years they begin stacking blocks and feeding themselves with utensils (though not always with great accuracy to begin). As with all things, we develop skills with practice. So provide your baby with ample opportunity… but be realistic with your expectations and anticipate both the challenges and messes that may result.
