Communist Party MarxistโKenya (CPM-K) Secretary General Booker Ngesa Omole was denied bail at a court hearing on 26 February after the judge ruled that a pre-bail report must first be filed before a decision can be made.
Omole was seized by police in Isiolo on 24 February in what his party argues was not a lawful arrest but a kidnapping.
Party officials say he was beaten overnight, suffering a broken tooth and a deep knife cut to his finger before being transferred to Mlolongo Police Station.
He is now being held at Nairobi Remand and Allocation Maximum Security Prison in the Industrial Area, an often overcrowded facility that houses remandees awaiting trial or pre-bail and has been criticised by rights groups over sanitation conditions.
