The remote and dramatic #Hardknott #Roman fort located in the Lake District, England. Founded in the 2nd Century AD, an inscription records it was garrisoned by the Fourth Cohort of Dalmatians, from the Balkans.
It was occupied off and on until the 3rd Century AD.

At only 3 acres, this remote fort comandeered the Eskdale Valley down to the Roman road to Ravenglass. The fort was built in the early 2nd century AD then abandoned by early 3rd century.
A visit to beautiful but windswept #Hardknott, the next #Roman fort along the inland road from our #Ravenglass excavation, undertaken with @MuncasterCastle for @lakedistrictpa. No wonder the Romans chose the sheltered port of Ravenglass for long-term settlement instead!
