Yesterday, Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr @Adaeze_Oreh, officially launched the first round of the 2024 Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health week in Rivers State. The week-long event, which commenced on Monday, July 22, and ends on Friday, July 26, is being implemented across all Primary Health Care centers in the state. Speaking at the event, the Hon. Commissioner said, “The health of mothers and children is a fundamental indicator of the overall health of our society. When mothers thrive, children thrive, and when children thrive, communities thrive. Our efforts today lay the foundation for the health and prosperity of future generations”. She added that the State had witnessed reductions in maternal and child mortality rates, increased vaccination coverage, and improved maternal and child nutrition over the past year. However, the work is far from over, as there are pressing challenges that require immediate attention and collective action. Dr Oreh revealed that although #MNCHWeek is mainly a facility-based program where services are rendered in health centres, outreaches will be carried out to hard-to-reach locations, schools, churches and other special locations. Throughout the week, various activities will be conducted to raise awareness, provide essential healthcare services, and equip families with the knowledge and tools necessary for healthy living - health education campaigns, free antenatal care registration, free deliveries by SBAs, vitamin A supplementation, deworming, immunization services, #HPV vaccination, family planning services, #CervicalCancer screening, birth registration and others. “Together, let us continue to strive for a State and world where every mother has a safe pregnancy, every newborn has a healthy start to life, and every child has the opportunity to grow and thrive.
