UN #HighLevelWeek provides good opportunities for engagement among CARICOM officials. COFCOR always meets during this week. I was therefore pleased to host my colleagues for the Twenty-Fourth Special Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) under the able chairmanship of The Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas of St. Kitts & Nevis. We discussed several foreign policy issues as well as CARICOM’s representation on bodies/agencies within various multilateral organisations. We met our new colleague from Suriname - H.E. Melvin Bouva, and had the opportunity to engage with Special Guests, namely:
- H.E. Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of the Republic of Austria;
- Mr. Volker Turk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights; and
- Amb. Edward Greene, Diplomats Without Borders.

The CELAC-Japan Ministerial Meeting set the stage for further 3rd party engagements during UN #HighLevelWeek. Japan is a valued partner for Jamaica and @CARICOMorg, so I was pleased to participate in the CELAC-Japan Ministerial Meeting as part of the Extended Troika, at which I had the opportunity to engage with H.E. IWAYA Takeshi Japan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. Our Jamaica-Japan (J-J) partnership and the CARICOM-Japan partnership feature robust collaboration across critical areas such as climate resilience, education, health, tourism, and support to Haiti. It stands as an inspiration for what can be achieved on the wider regional stage. We look forward to working with all CELAC partners to extend the benefits of this cooperation across the wider region, and commend the Colombian PTP for arranging this meeting. @MofaJapan_en @mfaftja @CancilleriaCol #UNGA80

I was pleased to participate in the Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) within the margins of #HighLevelWeek. Jamaica has been an active participant in the CELAC process that is based on our regard for democracy and the rule of law and the primacy of multilateralism. Jamaica views our current Chairmanship of CARICOM as a vital platform for advancing regional objectives. On the matter of security, notwithstanding Jamaica's significant reduction in homicides, we continue to emphasize the urgent need for collective action in the fight against transnational organised crime - particularly the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons. We view this as an inextricable part of maintaining our region as a true zone of peace. In this context, we continue to press for increased international support for Haiti. Even as we increase coordination with CELAC, we also look forward to deepening relations with external partners, several of whom we will also be engaging within the margins of this week. #UNGA80 #CELAC
We thank the Governments of Kenya and the USA for convening the High-Level Meeting to provide Kenya’s perspectives on the Multinational Security Support Mission to Haiti (MSS) - this marked the start to an active #HighLevelWeek agenda. Jamaica has stood with Haiti and alongside partners such as the USA Kenya and Canada, to eliminate gang violence and restore stability to Haiti. It was important to hear from and confer with Pres. Saint-Cyr of Haiti's Transitional Presidential Council, H.E. Pres. Ruto of Kenya, @DeputySecState among others, as Member States express support for the establishment of a UN Support Office for Haiti (UNSOH) and to transition the Multinational Security Support mission (MSS) into a strengthened Gang Suppression Force (GSF). #UNGA80
Prime Minister Hon. @slrabuka emphasised that climate change continues to inflict severe and disproportionate impacts on Fiji and other SIDS, compelling nations to divert scarce resources from development priorities towards rebuilding & recovery efforts.
