Did you know when Hoag's Object was discovered in 1950, Arthur Hoag said it was either a #galaxy or planetary nebula. We now know it's a galaxy.
Have you visited it in #SpaceEngine recently?

An excellent image of a little know galaxy. #Hoagsobject
Hoag's Object https://t.co/0nGo9C75y5 One of the most perfect ring galaxies in the sky. This strange galaxy is over 600 million l.y. away. The field is littered with faint background galaxies billions of l.y. away. 100cm & 43cm scopes. LRGB. 10 & 13hrs combined.
Did you know #ringgalaxies account for less than 0.1% of all known #galaxies?
Did further know when Arthur Hoag discovered #HoagsObject he didn't know if it was a planetary nebula or just a strange looking #galaxy.

The void between the core and the surrounding ring of mostly hot young blue stars stretches about 58,000 light years, while the ring itself is about 50,000 light years thick. In total, #HoagsObject is a sprawling 125 kilolight years in diameter, a beast of a cosmic anomaly.

Get lost in the beautiful and mysterious #galaxy known as #HoagsObject. This galaxy has a nucleus of older yellow stars⭐ surrounded by a ring of young blue stars🎆 separated by a gap spanning thousands of light-years. Captured by the @NASAhubble ✨ #Stardom
#HoagsObject is a non-typical galaxy of the type known as a ring galaxy.
The galaxy is named after #ArthurHoag who discovered it in 1950 and identified it as either a planetary nebula or a peculiar galaxy-with eight billion stars, spanning roughly 100,000 light years.

Discovered in 1950 by astronomer #ArthurHoag, this is technically a galaxy within a ring galaxy. In the left hand image we see yet another galaxy far behind it. It's 600 light-years away in the direction of the #SerpensConstellation.
If you want to know more about how astronomers think this bizarre space wheel might have formed, @drbecky_ has a nice video about it here: https://t.co/d9FIzTsEcM #HoagsObject

#HoagsObject is believed to exist in only 0.1pc of the known universe https://t.co/L6c8lxWjTB
This very rare ring galaxy known as #HoagsObject is revealing a secret.
