Thank you to everyone who attended the monthly Tuesday Memorial for homeless people who have died at Trinity Square in Toronto today.
Our friend Réal Leclair's name was among those names added to the Memorial. Réal was affectionately known as #HomelessJoe.
Real's father, brother and son attended the ceremony from Quebec, as did Street Nurse Anne Marie and Outreach Worker Maria, friends Jse Cse, Sascha, Margaret, KJ, Officer Richard Nimmo and myself. We know many more of you watched and will watch online. Thank you all.
A number of others attended to honour the other names that were added to the Memorial. Thank you all.
CBC Radio Canada (French) attended and interviewed Réall's family and will air a segment tomorrow monring on CBC Radio. Global News also attended. That segment may be on Global News tonight.

To They who chose to speak about their dislike for police, Réal would have wanted your voice to be heard. Thanks for contributing.

We are sad to share that our friend Réal Leclair, affectionately known as #HomelessJoe, has died from a heart attack while gathering water from a river near his shack in South Etobicoke (Toronto). Réal's body was found by a mountain biker. 22 Division Toronto Police led by Officer Rich Nimmo and team, as well as Coroner Dr Gupta have gone above and beyond to determine what happened and honour Réal. We all thank them. Street Nurse Anne Marie Batten and Retired Toronto Police Constable Scott Mills are in touch with Réal's family in Quebec who will be coming to Toronto to bring Réal's remains home for cremation & burial in their family cemetery. Anne Marie and Ret. Cst Mills started a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs. Réal's family did all they could to help him, as did many people. "Mental illness is a bitch". Talked with our friend #HomelessJoe late this afternoon. He has been in Montreal for a couple of weeks and is back now in Toronto under a bridge. Was nice to hear from him despite him not being in the best of moods. Hopefully tomorrow is better for him.
Our friend Real Leclair #HomelessJoe called me today. He got a $66 ticket for panhandling in Toronto. He called to find out where to pay it. Not sure giving a homeless guy a ticket is helpful? We will get it paid. Otherwise he is doing ok living in his shack under a bridge.
Met one man named Robert who reminded me a lot of my friend #HomelessJoe. His schitzophrenia keeps him on/off the streets. He was so grateful to tell his story tonight. Then there was the guy who travelled from Scarborough to get some food from the outreach team @VeahavtaNews 3/
Réal called this week. He is back at an undisclosed spot under a bridge in Toronto. He had been in Montreal when a propane tank exploded under another bridge & hadn't heard it had happened. I told him I had people asking me if he was ok. He says thanks for caring. #HomelessJoe
Réal called & was in good spirits. He is back in Toronto living under a bridge. He went to his hometown in Sherrigton, Quebec to visit the grave of his long ago deceased young son and ran into his elderly Dad on the street. His fsther and brother too him out to eat. #HomelessJoe
Réal called this weekend. He is living under a different bridge in Toronto in what he described as 'a decent shack'. Said he was leaving hitchhiking & was going to end up near Montreal to go visit grave of his young son who died yrs ago (Not son he keeps in touch w/) #HomelessJoe
Our friend #HomelessJoe called today. He's back in Toronto under a bridge (not same one as before). He has vacated his previous spot and has moved what he wanted to keep of his belongings into his storage unit. He went to Montreal for past 3 weeks and saw family at Aunt's funeral

Also learned that the @YRP has a good relationship with Real at his current location.. so thank you to York Regional Police. There are a lot of good cops out there. Unfortunately too often we only hear about the bad. #HomelessJoe
Sad reality is that there is no affordable housing available for the amount of money ODSP provides for a person who is unable to work due to mental health issues. One day, if we keep positively posting about our collaborative efforts, substantive change may happen! #HomelessJoe
For those who follow #HomelessJoe, the networking on social media worked for the good again today. A Manager at the Ontario Ministry of Transportation reached out to collaborate to try to get Real moved safely and effectively to facilitate some road work on bridge he lives under.
Got a call from Réal today to wish me Happy Easter. He is doing well. Was out to pick up some water and weed today. Says he is moving to the Queensway area in Toronto in a couple of weeks then will be going searching to rent a home somewhere. Doesn't know where. #HomelessJoe
