#horizontalreservationfortrans consultation in Chennai on 21st-22nd Oct, 2023.
On 21st Oct 2012, we started TRNC with our first public protest in Chennai demanding reservation for Trans persons. Over the years, we have organised several agitations, court cases, and community mobilizations to advance the cause. This weekend, with the support of community leaders from various parts of the country, we organised the first-ever National Consultation dedicated to Horizontal Reservation for Trans & Intersex persons.
In these 11 years, many changes have happened - be it NALSA judgement 2014, Trans Act 2019, or various state govts. taking steps to provide us supernumerary seats and vertical reservations within the OBC category. However, the fact on the ground, state after state, is that we still do not have equal opportunity for Trans persons - especially for those coming from rural and oppressed caste backgrounds.
In 9 years since NALSA, less than 20 Trans people have been able to secure permanent govt. jobs in South India - each one after many years of legal battles to assert our rights. As Trans people, we are forced to seek the court even to get a hall ticket for appearing in public service exams - let alone actually getting the job.
This is why we stand together in asserting that: When it comes to Trans liberation, Horizontal Reservation is the way forward!
Today we seek your solidarity to call on our legislators, bureaucrats, university administrators, and various stakeholders. We need Horizontal Reservation NOW!!!
