The mountain is a living being, & sometimes she likes to show off… frame one is #Kilimanjaro 16KM from #Horombo, one of the main 3 stop overs on your way to Uhuru Peak... looking so inviting, calling out your name to go be with her! But don’t let the calm appeal deceive you, for she lays in waiting, laying a trap, like a Mami Wata, inviting all those who are fools enough, to go deeper! Before you know it, you remember why TLC adviced you not to go chasing water falls, and why you should have stuck to the rivers and lakes you are used to. It’s not the mountain that you conquer, because by the time you are done, you will have submitted and bowed down to her will! At one point, the snow winds were so strong and violent that I imagined one of us was not supposed to be with us on this pilgrimage, just like Jonah was not supposed to be on his way to Nineveh! That if only they would turn back, then she would perhaps calm down! I recalled the words of Mwalimu Wandia Njoya, that our forefathers were smart enough not to disturb the mountains. This had me murmuring, “we are sorry for disturbing your peace”, and raising my hands in submission. Step by step, you learn to lean and bend to her will. From time to time, she is kind enough to show you her sweetness, but she quickly switches off, as if to remind you of the reason why James Blunt wrote the song “You are Beautiful”… because he saw a stranger in a bus that was driving off on the other side of the street… a moment so surreal that you even feel crazy at the thought of it being real. When you get to the top, when you finally walk on the summit, you become one with her. Her ways, now your ways, her secrets, now your secrets, your blood, your sweat, solidified on her, her glory, now yours too! It is an exhilarating moment…

#Horombo hut is our 2nd hut as we climb via Marangu route. For #climber opted 6days will have a additional day here for #acclimatization to #Mawenzi tarn hut and back to horombo. But 5days you will just have an overnight stay and then proceed to Kibo for your final #ascend.

On this day, two years ago, I was on my way to #Horombo hut, 3720m above sea level. One of the best moments of my #life, #free from what was holding me back, free as a bird, and I am thankful I am where I am today. #kilimanjaro
