8. Confession. Sins, as defined by the School, are to be confessed to your Tutor, often publicly at 'Group'. There is no confidentiality (think SES gossip grapevine); members' sins, attitudes, and faults are discussed and exploited by the leaders. #howtostartacult

5. Dispensing of existence. The leader decides who exists and who does not. Those outside the group are unenlightened or ‘asleep’ and must be converted or rejected. Thus the outside world loses all credibility. Should any member leave, he must also be rejected. #howtostartacult

4. Mystical manipulation. Manipulate experiences in order to demonstrate divine authority or spiritual advancement, allowing reinterpretation of events as the leader wishes. Think homeopathic miracle cures, or coincidental flashbacks from past lives. #howtostartacult

3. Doctrine over person. Personal experiences are subordinated to the Truth and contrary experiences are denied or reinterpreted to fit the School ideology. Think small children forced into making up examples of how saying "Aham" at key moments made it all better #howtostartacult

2. Demand for purity. The world, or creation, is viewed as black and white. Members must confirm to the ideology and strive for perfection. Guilt and shame are powerful tools. Particularly, but not exclusively, when it comes to women. #howtostartacult

1. Load the language. Use words and phrases in ways that the outside world may not understand. Use thought-terminating cliches, such as "neither accept nor reject", which serve to alter members' thought processes to conform to the School's way of thinking. #howtostartacult
