It's not wrong, per se, to have that reaction, because improper holding of large fish can result in injury. However, what the anglers are pictured doing here is acceptable. We strongly discourage holding the fish vertically by the jaw or gills and advocate #HugAPaddlefish instead

Oh, I completely on board with this. So much bad fish (especially sturgeon and paddlefish) handling are shared on social media, we need to work on our image.

We are out braving the cold & doing population assessments for paddlefish. This entails deploying miles of nets, measuring, marking, & releasing the catch. We want anglers to know that picking up large fish by the jaw or gills can injure fish, so #HugAPaddlefish instead.
