Why can no young fast bowler in Australia, or anywhere else, bowl the way Mitchell Starc still bowls at 36? Alex Malcolm put that question to Australian cricket, and every answer pointed the same way...there is no next Mitchell Starc. We all know Starc is a phenomenal player. He deserves every bit of the hype and appreciation his records and his career have earned him. But what's even more impressive is the athleticism and uniqueness that separate him from the rest of the world, because how on earth is anyone bowling that well at this age, with that pace and that precision? That is what makes Malcolm's piece land so hard. It looks at the bowlers being groomed to replace him, men a decade younger, and finds them breaking down before they can properly arrive, while the one they are meant to succeed keeps charging in with the same energy he had ten years ago. The people inside the game have stopped pretending there is a method to copy. What he does, not everyone can do. His body is simply built differently, and it has been from the day he was born. And on top of whatever he was given, there is what he chooses. This is a man who once bowled through a Boxing Day Test with a broken finger, whose three-year unbroken run of Tests was only ever stopped by a tendon tearing off the bone, who carried an entire Ashes attack alone when the others went down. The gift explains the pace. The relentlessness explains everything else. So beyond every record in his favour, his relentless ability and athleticism deserve all the appreciation in the world. Watch him properly while he is still running in, because there is no next one coming.
