@KirkTousaw I agree, though HLVd truncated the number of commercially practicable cultivars in hop to resistant populations. We may see a similar trend and perhaps intensify in areas associated with its origins. Possibly the #Humulus/#Cannabis ancestor had it, too!
Common #hop, a #versatile #crop. The common hop #Humulus #lupulus (#Cannabaceae) is a perennial whose above-ground parts can grow up to six or eight meters high, depending on whether it is the wild form or the cultivated form. The #aboveground parts of this #climbing plant die in autumn, and only the rhizome overwinters. The common hop is native to Europe, western Asia and also North America. It has a wide range of uses, as an ornamental shrub, for #food and for various pharmacological purposes. It is also the basis for #brewing #beer.
The common hop requires #nitrogenrich #soils, which should have a higher amount of moisture. However, the wild form has also a certain tolerance for drier soils and is for example found on the edges of forests or around bushes. When climbing, the #tendrils turn to the right, i.e. following a clockwise direction. Female and male flowers can be clearly distinguished from each other; male #inflorescences are panicle-like, while #female ones are ear-like and cone-shaped. Common hop has been #cultivated for brewing beer since the middle ages. For brewing purposes only the female ears are used. These should be unfertilized, otherwise the typical #bitterness would be weaker. But hops are also #edible. The young shoots in particular are prepared as delicacy. The bitter hop taste is also used to refine foods like drinks such as liqueur. In a medical context, hops are used as a natural #sedative.
The many advantages of the cultivated form of Humulus lupulus are also appreciated outside the original distribution area of the wild form, for example in Brazil. The authors M. Machado et al. (2018) investigated possibilities for more efficient propagation of common hop using #tissueculture techniques. This involves the reproduction of plant parts under artificial laboratory conditions. Experiments were carried out in southern #Brazil to find suitable culture media for #invitro #shoots multiplication and also for #exvitro #rooting. It was also about the successful #establishment of the #plantlets under field conditions. One of the results showed that micropropagated plants showed a 100% survival rate under field conditions. But not only efficient propagation methods are important for the successful cultivation of common hop, also the knowledge of possible #parasites. Basically, parasites are part of the #naturalcommunity that a plant represents. However, controlling parasites is an important issue when #farming crops. But first one has to know which parasites actually exist.
Using morphological and molecular biological methods from a Brazilian hop culture, the authors R. F. Gonsaga et al. (2021) were able to reliably identify the #rootknot #nematode #Meloidogyne #incognita (#Heteroderidae, #Nematoda) as the cause of pathological plant symptoms. According to the authors, this is the first detection of this nematode species on common hop. However, the species was already known as a serious pest on other crops such as maize, coffee, sugarcane, vegetables or cotton. The knowledge that common hop can also act as its host is important because Humulus lupulus is usually propagated vegetatively and there is therefore a strong risk of the root parasite spreading to previously unparasitized cultivated areas, a danger that #scientists now know about and can test strategies to prevent further spread of this parasitic nematode.
