VW's long-awaited affordable EV, the ID 2, is not due to arrive until May 2026. Volkswagen has promised to release a modern electric car, the ID.2, at an affordable price by the middle of the decade. However, customers will have to wait for almost two and a half years before the model is delivered in significant quantities. The ID.2 is expected to be the first electric Volkswagen offered in the base version for under €25,000. The production of the new model is expected to start in May 2026, with the car being unveiled in the fall of 2025. The base version of the ID.2 will cost less than €25,000, but only slightly. “When we defined the price, it was not based on wishful thinking. We have defined clear measures also at the battery level so that we can achieve the price,” said VW development board member Kai Grünitz to the car magazine. Originally, the ID.2 was supposed to cost less than €24,000, but since then, raw material prices have risen significantly, and inflation has also contributed to the increase. “The boundary conditions change almost weekly, that’s right,” says Grünitz. “You have to adapt to that.” VW gave a preview of its upcoming entry-level electric car, the ID.2all, in early 2023. The 4050 millimeter long car’s appearance is reminiscent of the VW Polo. With the 166 kW/226 PS strong front-wheel drive, 450 kilometers per charge are possible. Technical specifications for the production version are not yet available, but the base version is expected to be less powerful than the ID.2all. Volkswagen’s competitors are starting earlier in the segment: Citroën is already taking orders for the ë-C3, which costs €23,300 and is due to hit the market this spring. Renault also plans to offer the new Renault 5 this year, which is expected to cost around €25,000. Further competition for the VW ID.2 and other electric cars in its price range are combustion engine models: Since the new EU7 emission standard is less stringent, traditional small cars with internal combustion engines will continue to be offered, which are cheaper. For example, the Polo from Volkswagen’s own stable currently costs from €21,590 in the base version. The Sandero from the budget brand Dacia can even be purchased for €11,300 already.
