#IFJAD is incredibly privileged to be at the Parliament–Youth Agrifood Systems Retreat, currently underway at Swahili Beach Hotel, Diani), organized by AGRA in partnership with the The Consortium of African Youth in Agriculture and Climate Change (CAYACC).
This high-level convening brings together Members of Parliament, county governments, youth leaders, and strategic partners to strengthen parliamentary leadership in transforming Kenya’s agrifood systems.
The discussions are focused on ensuring that policy, investment, and accountability frameworks are aligned to deliver:
- Food security and resilient agrifood systems
- Decent and inclusive youth employment
- Increased investment in agriculture and agribusiness
- Stronger implementation of national and continental frameworks
Key priorities on the table include:
- Priority policy and legislative reforms to unlock youth agrifood jobs (targeting up to 300,000 jobs)
- Mobilizing up to US$600 million in public and private investment aligned with Kenya’s agriculture agenda, NASIP, and CAADP commitments
- Strengthening adoption of the Africa Agribusiness Youth Strategy (AAYS), Youth Agrifood Systems Performance Index (YAPI), and Kenya’s Youth Agribusiness Strategy
- Using CAADP Biennial Review findings to improve budgeting, oversight, and accountability
- Establishing clear mechanisms to track implementation of agreed actions
This retreat marks an important step toward turning policy dialogue into coordinated action and measurable impact for young people and communities across Kenya.

Tabitha Nekesa, #IFJAD’s Sustainable Land and Water Management expert, on why growing food in a hospital matters.

As #WorldSoilDay2025 nears, we’re reminded that soil health is a policy priority for Kenya’s food security, climate resilience, and public health. Degraded soils weaken productivity and raise living costs.

Issues za fairness na dignity ndizo msingi wa food system yenye afya.
Zikikosekana, ndipo watu huuza chakula kimejaa kemikali mbaya…
consumer anakula chakula safi,
mtoto shuleni anakua na afya,
mgonjwa anapona kwa lishe bora.
Si tu tulinde chakula, bali tujenge mfumo wa chakula wenye fairness na dignity kwa wote?

A Milestone for Health and Nutrition Education!
After several productive discussions, #IFJAD and #DAT (@diabetestrust) has been granted space by Thika Level 5 Hospital to establish a demonstration organic garden within the hospital grounds!
This garden will serve as a living classroom, helping patients and community members learn about the importance of consuming safely produced, organic foods for better health and disease prevention.
We’re equally excited by the hospital’s commitment to ensure that vegetables from the garden will supplement nutritious meals served to patients — especially those most in need.
This partnership marks a powerful step toward linking health, food systems, and nutrition education right at the point of care.
Stay tuned for updates as the garden takes root! 🌾

It is unacceptable that those who feed the nation remain poor. Smallholder farmer poverty in Kenya continues because of unfair markets, weak governance, and exclusion from decisions that shape agriculture. This must change.

Planting indigenous trees around our farm help prevent soil erosion due to heavy rains and wind which may cause heavy loss to our local farmers. Agroecology practices helps enhance the four dimensions of food security -availability, access, stability, and utilization.#ifjad

It's time to regain the power of the African food system and reveal the Capabilities of our traditional foods towards our health. And this starts by us getting to the farm and producing our own indigenous foods. #ifjad
It’s time to heal & restore our connection to the land, soil, food, environment and health #FoodJustice

Ignorance is the biggest enemy to food sovereignty. Understanding our food history, and indigenous practices, and challenging colonial narratives are key steps toward a decolonized, resilient food system. Let’s keep learning & unlearning. #FoodJustice #RightToFood @via_campesina
