It was a great honour to chair a very special #IGHILecture in #London today and introduce the @auroraprize winner Dr @CatenaTom, a humanitarian and surgeon, who has a magnetic capability of inspiring others through his work. Very exciting to hear about his journey in #Sudan!

Thank you Dr.@CatenaTom for the inspiring talk. I hope your work continues to raise awareness and bring about sustainable solutions for improving the health of the people in the Nuba Mountains. #IGHILecture #Globalhealth #Sudan #Nubamountains @Imperial_IGHI @auroraprize_
A standing ovarian as we wave goodbye to @CatenaTom after a brilliant #IGHILecture. His stories, words and advice will stay with us for a long time. Thank you.

“One of my goals for joining #AuroraPrize as Chair was to amplify the success we’ve had in #Nuba by shining the spotlight on other neglected areas”, @CatenaTom #IGHILecture

.@SaraPantuliano, Managing Director of ODI on @CatenaTom’s lecture at @Imperial_IGHI “Thank you for coming here and reminding us that at the essence #humanitarian work is about helping people.” #IGHILecture

What about the safety aspect of working in conflict? Dr Tom tells us the harsh reality: "It's a risk. If you want to work in a war zone you've gotta be prepared to die. You can't go and be surprised if something terrible happens." #IGHILecture

Dr @CatenaTom gives a room full of students some excellent careers advice: "Start with what you love. And then think, 'how do I make that into a career?' Follow it, step by step, and fit things in your life around what you love. And don't rush it." #IGHILecture

Inspiring evening listening to @catenatom’s experience of running a hospital in #Sudan’s Nuba Mountains after all expatriates had left, investing in local responders who today can provide advanced levels of care thanks to his training over the years. #IGHILecture

How did Dr Tom get the local community in Sudan skilled in medicine, with no prior training? "the buzzword is capacity building. You have to train local staff. I want there to be 100 Dr Tom's when I leave, who can do what I do but even better." #IGHILecture

“It’s hard to be effective in public health without a degree of trust with the community. The people need to see that you’re going to stick around in good times and bad”, Chair of Aurora Humanitarian Initiative @CatenaTom #IGHILecture

It's impossible to be effective in public health without trust @davidnabarro talks to @auroraprize winner @CatenaTom #IGHILecture

Dr Tom opens his lecture with his unconventional route to medicine and the journey that took him to Sudan, where he's been running a hospital in conflict. "I wasn't welcomed with opened arms. The people had been put down and oppressed. I had to gain their trust." #IGHILecture
