A 46 member delegation from the Command & Staff College, #Japan visited #INSHansa on 24 Oct 25. The team visited key facilities including ATC, #INAS316, MiG Simulator and #INAS300. The visit provided the participants with a comprehensive understanding of Naval Air Operations and its strategic capabilities.

Sad news. The first 'Tiger Leader' of INAS 300, Captain Balbir Dutt Law, passes away at 99.

Folks, sad news coming in from United Kingdom about the passing, on 31 Dec 24, of #BalbirDuttLaw, one of Indian Navy's aviation pioneers & the first Squadron Commander (or Tiger Leader as he is called) of 300 Sqn (White Tigers). He was 99.
Balbir Law was one of Navy's earliest fighter pilots & helped build Indian Navy's aviation branch in different ways. He was from the first batch of five pilots awarded Wings in July 1950; on 9th April '53, he executed the first amphibious landing of an Indian Navy Sealand aircraft in Kochi channel. He was the First Flight Cdr of Naval Jet Flight at Sulur, which introduced Jets to Navy and, later, in July 1960, he became the Commissioning Commanding Officer of INAS 300, few months before the commissioning of our Aircraft Carrier #INS Vikrant. Incidentally, on 29 September 1960, he along with LtCdr BR Acharya completed their Deck Landing Qualifications aboard HMS Victorious, flying Indian Navy Seahawks. (BD Law was flying a/c IN 159) . #Note. There is one mistake in this post where I refer to Ronnie mistakenly as Arindam (the Alize pilot) instead of Ranendra Nath (RN) Ghosh.
While he also was Little F on Vikrant and CO INS Hansa later (Dec 66 to Dec 67), we can't reduce his Naval Career to Aviation alone. Among his other appointments were Command of the anti-submarine Frigate #INSKuthar for nearly two years including during the 1965 War & of the Cruiser #INSDelhi from Jan to Dec 1970 during which time it participated in two Tactical Exercises. He attended the 9th NDC in 1969 & was awarded the AVSM for distinguished service in the Republic Day Honours of 1971.
Born on 06 Sep 1925 in Jullunder, Law was a contemporary of several Navy legends like OS Dawson, MP Awati, DS Paintal, MK Roy & such like. He was a 'bright rising star' and poised to go up but a change in rules led to his decision to resign. Married to a Britisher, the new rules required foreign spouses to take Indian citizenship. Unwilling to forego his wife's British citizenship he chose the honorable way of putting in his papers in mid/early 70s.
He moved to the UK and when I got in touch with him few years ago, as part of my Naval history research, he was settled in Suffolk. We used to communicate occasionally on email and he was kind enough to send me some papers & share a copy of the commissioning warrant of 300 Squadron. One could however discern a gentle decline in his health and memory over the past few years. Our last exchange was in Feb 24 when I excitedly informed him of my participation in @JaipurLitFest where a book on Navy in 1971 war featuring the exploits of the 300 Squadron would be discussed. He conveyed his best wishes.

I did a lot of flying with him & had a very happy tenure as well. Commissioned the Squadron on 7th July 1960, I was the OOG. Lots of Happy memories. He was the Boss when the Jet Flt was formed & operated from Sulur flying Vampires. Late Inam Chowdhury, RN Singh & self were the first lot of Jet pilots in the Navy. Balbir Law got assigned to UK for the formation of the Frontline Fighter Squadron at Lossiemouth in Jan 1960. I went to HMS Excellent to do the AWI Course (Theory) before joining them. Together Balbir Law (CO designate INAS 300), BR Acharya (Senior Pilot designate) and myself (AWI), did intensive flying. Others joined later and we finally shifted to RNAS Brawdy in Wales where the Squadron was commissioned. Balbir Law, in end 1960, was assigned to Vikrant as Lt Cdr Flying. Then Lt Cdr Tahiliani joined the Sqn as Snr P & Archie was CO of the Sqn. Tallyho was the first to DLQ Vikrant and myself second. Balbir Law & Archie had done theirs earlier on an RN carrier.
