Before the hashtags, before the trending movements, before #FreeCongo, #CongoIsBleeding, #Telema, #Ingeta… there were Congolese freedom fighters scattered across the world standing up for justice. Since the first sparks of war in 1996, these Congolese activists rose from the ashes of betrayal and invasion, denouncing the US-backed aggression of Rwanda and Uganda in their country.
They called themselves “les combattants”. Fighters. Their courage reverberated across oceans, inspiring me and countless others to stand tall for Congo. Millions of Congolese who will never know their names nonetheless carry the legacy of their sacrifice. It is no accident they embraced the title combattants. Patrice Lumumba himself, on that fateful day of June 30, 1960, hailed us: “Combattants de l’indépendance aujourd’hui victorieux, je vous salue…” meaning “Valiant fighters for our independence, today victorious, I salute you.”
Yesterday, we learned that one of our fiercest fighters has joined the ancestors. Her name was Youyou Muntu-Mosi.
She was unyielding. Fearless. A lioness of the struggle. From the heart of Europe, she stood against the oppression devouring Congo, long before it was popular, long after others surrendered their convictions. Many who once walked beside her abandoned the cause choosing comfort, proximity to power, or the spoils of Tshisekedi’s corrupt regime. They mocked her, insulted her, tried to silence her. Yet she never wavered. She carried the truth like a torch in the storm, proclaiming again and again that Congo must be free, that Congolese women must be defended, that our struggle was sacred. She fought until her very last breath.
I had the honor of working with her for more than a decade. In September 2022, I embraced her in Charleroi, face to face, a meeting etched forever in my heart. She radiated love for our people and gave everything, her entire life, to the cause of Congolese sovereignty.
Some ask, “Where are the Congolese?” I answer: they are everywhere, resisting. If you have ever heard the cries of Congo, if the world knows even a fraction of our suffering, it is because of women like Youyou and the combattants who refused to let the silence win.
Today, we salute you, our valiant combattante. You stand in the eternal lineage of Kimpa Vita, of Lumumba, of every soul who defied chains. Your name will not vanish into shadows. We will carve it into history as one of the most courageous Congolese women of our time.
Rest in power, Youyou Muntu-Mosi. The struggle continues, and in your spirit, we will never surrender!!!
