Watched #InWhoseName the new Ye documentary and enjoyed it way more than I expected to. Doesn’t have a narrative arch. It’s a vlog of Ye’s work, life and family and the toll of trying to exist with bipolar disorder. It’s tough. I have way more empathy for him and Kim and anyone who loves him.

Watched the #inwhosename movie tonight at the movie theater (about the fall of Kanye West) and it was a pretty depressing way to spend a Friday night. Spoiler, it was pretty ominous to see Charlie Kirk in the movie for a brief moment. Why would I go to the movies to see a Kanye West movie? For those of us under 35 Kanye was a hero growing up. He used to represent an inspiring, yet edgy version of a courageous, and ambitious approach to following your dreams. At one time he was the richest black man in America, the 3rd most awarded Grammy artist, and was married to the most famous woman on earth. I first heard 'Jesus Walks' when I was in 5th grade and was hooked since. I was quoted in @NYMag when he came to Charleston with his Presidential campaign because I met with his team and got VIP access to his infamous campaign event. You can see/hear me briefly in the Netflix doc about him. So what's the takeaway? The documentary doesn't follow his rise from the beginning and ultimate downfall, it picks up around 2018 and goes through 2024. It shows him giving his life to Christ, making the best selling Christian album of all time, and finding peace with his family around 2019. Then he decides to run for President in 2020, loses his wife, loses his kids, loses his billions, loses his Gap and Adidas deals, and most upsettingly - losing his faith in God. God has used imperfect people for his perfect plan all through history. I think Kanye was truly given gifts from God that were meant to bring more to Him. For a blip in history he was doing that. I saw it when I went to his Sunday Service concert in Gatlinburg Tennessee - it was a sincere and beautiful Christian concert that had every race, age group, and class all praising Jesus in an incredible way. So what happened to him? It's so easy to say "he's crazy" or "he's off his meds" or "he hasn't been the same since his mom died" but I think it's much much deeper than that. I truly believe the people that have the most impactful gifts, that can be used by God to bring more people to Christ are the ones who are most tortured, the ones most under attack, and the ones whose faith is going to be most challenged. "In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted." - 2 Timothy 3:12 Ultimately Kanye is still in a lost state, and his hateful comments over the last two years shouldn't be celebrated by his fans (however many he has left). But as Christians we should learn from the through line of what we've seen from this character. Talented, sincere, well intentioned, and gifted people - who say things we agree with politically can always be compromised. There are people on "our side" who are compromised, that appear on the surface to be righteous principled leaders, but are nothing more than self serving power seeking narcissists. As I left the theater, I couldn’t shake the weight of Kanye’s story. His rise, his faith, his fall—it’s a sobering call to pray for those under spiritual attack, to discern true character beyond words, and to hold fast to faith. Let’s pray for his redemption and stay vigilant, knowing God can still work through our imperfections—if we let Him.
