Today, the tribes of #Gadabuursi & #Isse seem to be at the cusp of direct war. They’ve lived side by side for centuries so what’s changed now? Global powers have had their eyes on this region for decades, and today’s instability is not accidental. Conflict was always the goal. Let’s unpack some of actors & interests. 𝟏. #𝐃𝐣𝐢𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐢: 𝐈𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐎𝐦𝐚𝐫 𝐆𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐡 IOG has two vital interests. Firstly, the life line of his regime is the port of Djibouti. Any revival of a port in Awdal will directly jeopardise revenue in Djibouti for obvious reasons. Borama & the Hargeisa administration have been pushing for a new airport in Borama & potential port in Lughaya which is a direct problem IOG seeks to avoid. His position on the illegal Ethiopia-Somaliland MoU & on Berbera port shows this. His second interest is the upcoming Djiboutian Presidential elections. He recently changed the constitution to allow him to run for another term which drew significant backlash. Turning attention to an “existential war” in Awdal provides a distraction from the political crisis. 𝟐. #𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐚: 𝐀𝐛𝐢𝐲’𝐬 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 The Ethiopians have expressed interest in capturing Saylac for centuries. Like Assab, Abiy is laid claim to Saylac and seeks to gain control at the minimum. The MoU with Hargeisa demonstrated just that. Conflict in Awdal provides the perfect conditions for a proxy war, influence & eventual control as seen in southern Somalia. Look at Gedo. Also, the revival of the deal could be a bargaining chip against Irro. Local reports already suggest ENDF units have been deployed to the Awdal border. 𝟑. #𝐄𝐠𝐲𝐩𝐭 & #𝐄𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚 𝐀𝐱𝐢𝐬: 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐚 Any Ethiopian presence in the area is not only rejected IOG but also Cairo & Asmara for obvious reasons. Addis Ababa has already succeeded in the finalisation of the GERD dam. Its final goal is a naval base which is also supported by the UAE-Israel axis to strengthen influence over Yemen & the Bab-el-Mandeb region. With war rumbling between Asmara & Addis Ababa over the current conflicts in Amhara & Tigray, a naval base is an existential threat to Eritrea. 𝟒. 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 & #𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬 The FGS seeks to curtail the separatist agenda. However, the method used by HSM has been questioned - does it benefit Somali unity or IOG interests? Clan elders were invited to Mogadishu in partnership with IOG to create a new FMS without full consultation with other locals. This plays a significant part in the current clan tensions in Awdal. Villa Somalia is also concerned about Ethiopian expansion and with Somaliland (Gadabuursi/Isaaq) allied with Addis Ababa, HSM is relying on IOG & Isse to curtail this. But at what expense? 𝟓. 𝐈𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞 𝐨𝐟 #𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚, #𝐓𝐚𝐢𝐰𝐚𝐧, 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 #𝐔𝐒𝐀 & #𝐈𝐬𝐫𝐚𝐞𝐥 China has already condemned the relationship btw Somaliland & Taiwan. Reality is, Beijing seeks to limit any form of recognition for Taiwan that challenges its “One China” principle. Actions like forming soft connections in Somalia such as Northeast State & the FGS shows that. Conversely, the U.S. seeks a base in #Berbera to strengthen its influence in a vital region also in line with Israel. For Tel Aviv, access to a U.S. base in Berbera would better allow it to gather intelligence & launch attacks against Houthis & Iran. Access to Berbera has been in U.S. interests since the Barre regime. Here is the problem for China, if Somaliland received recognition in exchange for the base, Hargeisa WOULD CERTAINLY recognise Taiwan which would also be in U.S. interests. Let’s not forget, China & US have a naval base in Djibouti!
