#idTech could have become one of @XBOX major in-house engines, similar to how @EA has #Frostbite, @Ubisoft has #Snowdrop and #Anvil, #Capcom has RE Engine, @RockstarGames has RAGE, @valvesoftware has Source 2, #PlayStation has DECIMA while @Nintendo continues to rely on a framework-oriented approach.
idTech already had a long history of powering many titles through id Tech 4 with it's GPL v3 license.
From id Tech 5 onward, it continued to be licensed and adopted outside of id Software for titles such as #QuakeChampions, Dishonored 2, and Wolfenstein. The latest example is Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which uses a customized version of id Tech 7 with #RayTracing.
Currently, #Microsoft still has several in-house game engines, including Turn 10's engine, the Flight Simulator engine, the #Minecraft engine, and others. However, each of them is primarily used for a single franchise.
Microsoft could have made id Tech openly available again, similar to how it used to be, or at least encouraged its wider adoption across Xbox Studios. This would have been especially feasible given that Microsoft also owns #Havok Physics.
Instead, they chose the #UnrealEngine + #Havok route. I honestly think this will hurt the potential audience for these Microsoft titles, as #UE5 comes with significant performance challenges that negatively impact both the final product and its commercial success. As it has consistently happened across this generation.
Microsoft missed a massive opportunity.
It could have turned id Tech 8 into a true rival to Unreal Engine.
Instead, Microsoft's 'leadership' proved once again that it has no idea how to capitalize on the technology it already owns.

@asha_shar Quite surprised to see @mattbooty still in office, especially after the massacre at @idSoftware for those of you who wanted more @DOOM, #Quake, and @wolfenstein, it makes absolutely no sense.
For pity's sake, support #idTech, don't impose the infamous Unreal Engine.
