What Jewish books would you recommend for #WorldKidLitMonth? or books that aren't *about* Jewishness, but are infused with kids' lived experience? Recommended starting point: @GreenBeanBks and the #JewishChildrensBookAwards!

A very quick hour has passed! Huge thanks to @edbookfest staff and team for all your support behind the scenes, our amazing panel and audience! @a_reflective "...you've taken the first step by coming along and starting a conversation about fair representation.." #InclusiveKidLit
Audience question - a story I want to write based in Japan, I am not Japanese. Based on a true story about a village there, should I stick to Japan or base it on UK? @a_reflective it's important to know the story, your Japanese friends can help, do your research #InclusiveKidLit
"Definitely the responsibility of the publisher at acquisition. Can they stand by the book? Prove their research? Editor needs to help the author get it right. If you do get it wrong, don't react straight away. Work with your team in a measured way" @FlorisBooks #InclusiveKidLit
What to do if writers get it wrong? @Julie_Farrell_ why did they get it wrong? Not enough research? If you're wading into the space of a marginalised community, why are you doing it? Risk too great? #InclusiveKidLit
Is playing it safe and only writing your own experience, more harmful? @a_reflective "...For me it was a responsibility to make sure I'd researched it all. It is from your perspective but it is other humans you're writing about. Be aware of their experience..." #InclusiveKidLit
Vital to include Inclusion Ambassadors when editing. Hope that publishers will help with costs for all - especially new and emerging writers. @Julie_Farrell_ #InclusiveKidLit
"...What are you as a publisher looking for re authenticity from a writer?... You need to have a close connection with that community/strong reason to write them. To work with @InclusiveMinds & support process through with community members to read. @FlorisBooks #InclusiveKidLit
"...Make the characters real and not just ticking a box by having a marginalised secondary character..." #InclusiveKidLit "...are you an ally? Could the character have been any colour or race? Why that community? What involvement have you had with them?..." @a_reflective
@a_reflective "... Important to have more than one sensitivity reader as not everyone has the same experience. Ask yourself, does the character have a back story? Write well-rounded characters rather than two dimensional. What are their hopes & dreams?..." #InclusiveKidLit
"...Celebrate who you are! We need to get away from damaging tropes - disabled villain, scars, to change the disabled characters without taking their needs in to account..." #InclusiveKidLit @Julie_Farrell_
"... solidarity of marginalised communities is increasing. So much nuance and layers in this conversation. Great to be here to discuss this today..." @Julie_Farrell_ #InclusiveKidLit
"...Choosing to step into the shoes of a marginalised character. Ask yourself if you're the best person to write it. Disability has been used in the past as a character quirk which is not representative of the reality..." @Julie_Farrell_ #InclusiveKidLit
