@CTmagazine This may be well-meaning but it pushes the narrative that the victims of injustice need handouts instead real changes in policy and laws. #inclusiveministries
@CTmagazine Get to a place outside of the white space with others like me where we can talk and express freely and encourage each other. There were a number of years I was so culture shocked I didn't know I needed this. I suffered and didn't know it. #inclusiveministries
@CTmagazine Denying and disbelieving someone's hurt/grievance shuts them down and blows up any trust that could have been built. Leaders don't do this. Compassion and empathy drive great leadership strategies. #inclusiveministries
@CTmagazine No one wants to be the ‘angry black person’ reminding ppl of what they do wrong. Bias, prejudice and the like exist in forms large and small. We all need space to say ‘this made me feel some kind of way’. Most times to highlight not to criminalize someone. #inclusiveministries
We're going to officially wrap our conversation now.
Thank you to everyone who shared personal stories and advice here. If you're just seeing this conversation now, please feel free to chime in you have experience relevant to the questions #InclusiveMinistries
What have been the best ways for you to stay emotionally and spiritually sustained while working at predominantly white churches and ministries? #InclusiveMinistries
@CTmagazine This is only complicated when people willfully ignore what they see. If a member of the kingdom is hurting we should do all we can to address their issue not ignore it. You can no longer see bias as ‘not my problem’’. #SEESOMETHINGSAYSOMETHING #inclusiveministries
@CTmagazine Admit there is systemic racism. Openly discuss intolerance for it and create HR policies that protect victims and punish violators. Keep an active open-door policy. Keep confidences. Allow them access and acceptance along the full chain of command. #inclusiveministries
@CTmagazine Believe your POC members/staff when they bring concerns to you. Follow up with them on your actions to resolve their issues and to see if they feel the resolution was adequate. If not, confab and try again. #inclusiveministries
@CTmagazine None of us want to be your token. Which will require humility and for said leader to examine why they’re hiring a POC in first place. If you’re looking for an “assimilated person” or good POC someone that whites can get along with... check your heart #inclusiveministries
@CTmagazine We have more experience and education than you realize. Our having to navigate various worlds to get in the position of leadership says more than you'll be able to know. Trust us. We care about what you think and love to hear your ideas. #inclusiveministries
@CTmagazine Stop prioritizing white feelings over Black bodies. Ex. Wn conflict arises on a mixed-race team, spending more time and space focusing on tone, terms, & a white person’s hurt feelings than addressing the actual concerns about racial justice & making changes. #InclusiveMinistries
@CTmagazine I wish they knew our ethnicity means we really do see things from a different perspective. We should be regularly asked what our perspective is. When capitalized on in healthy ways, our perspectives enrich teams we serve and increase beneficial outcomes. #inclusiveministries
What about the nature of churches and ministries can make it specifically challenging to call out instances of racism?
What can churches and ministries do that could make this easier? #InclusiveMinistries
@CTmagazine I don't mind being asked hardly anything if it seems my answers matter. It starts to wear on me when it seems my answering is of no effect. #inclusiveministries
What do you wish more direct reports knew about having supervisors of color? #InclusiveMinistries
What do you wish more white supervisors knew about supervising staff of color? #InclusiveMinistries
@CTmagazine 11. Ask people of color to lead your trainings, discussions, changes on diversity. We have been displaced for centuries, are highky knowledgeable of white culture and can provide practical tools that go beyond surface engagement. #InclusiveMinistries
@CTmagazine Whiteness is invasive. Whiteness is unassuming. Whiteness is powerful. A culture in which whiteness is unchecked will ALWAYS undermine, discourage, fatigue, & ultimately dismiss POC. You might as well post a sign that reads: YOU’RE UNWELCOMED HERE #inclusiveministries
Oftentimes, white staff will seek out staff of color to ask them to weigh on things related to race. When is that appropriate? When does it start to wear down the relationship? #InclusiveMinistries
