If “Urgent Care clinics” would do basic physical exams, half of their emergency room referrals would be completely avoided. I can’t tell you how many patients I see in the Emergency Department that have never even been touched or examined by the NP staffing the urgent care clinic. I guess the problem is, most of the mid-level practitioners who staff Urgent Cares don’t have adequate physical exam skills and without a CT scanner, don’t know how to make a diagnosis. I’m not sure how to remedy that, and certainly not trying to shame anyone, but ER volumes are crazy high and unsustainable and a basic physical exam in an urgent care clinic would help bleed off a fairly significant number of these. Rant over….. for now. 🤦‍♂️
