I really don’t understand this argument that the pitch was so tricky that the Indian batters simply couldn’t score. Okay, the pitch was difficult. But Japan scored 30 runs too, while India scored 32. So by that logic, are we saying Japanese batters are on the same level as Indian batters? And if not, why are we acting as if the Indian batters were completely helpless because of the pitch? India play probably 20 times more cricket than Japan. Are we really saying our batters are so incapable that they just surrender whenever they come across a small, tricky pitch? We all know Indian batters struggle on little difficult pitches. But are we seriously saying the Japanese bowling attack was so difficult that India could manage only two boundaries in a five-over game? These Japanese bowlers play roughly the number of matches India can play in a month over the course of an entire year. So let’s not pretend India were facing some unstoppable bowling attack. Defending a bad performance is one thing. But defending this performance simply by saying “the pitch was bad” actually ends up downgrading your own team. Because if the pitch alone is enough to explain India scoring just 32, then what are we really saying about the quality of Indian batting? That our batters are so weak that they surrender every time the conditions get slightly difficult? And then there was the wide. Imagine if that decision had gone against India. We were literally in a situation where the umpire initially given the wide and then reversed the decision. India could have actually lost that game. Not every bad performance needs to be explained away. Honestly, this one just isn’t defendable.
