My favourite feature was perhaps the #LogarithmicSpiral of the #TulipStairs, the genius of early 17thC design of the #CantileverPrinciple, the first of its kind in England: the best of #InigoJones’s synthesis of classical geometry, elegant engineering, and restrained beauty.

A lovely day exploring the brilliant architecture of #QueensHouse in Greenwich. Built after #InigoJones's 1613–1615 grand tour of Roman Renaissance and #PalladianArchitecture, this classical statement is the 1st anglicised Palladian form, just outside #PalladianFractalDimensions.

#OTD 1672 d. #JohnWebb architect, who worked with #InigoJones on designs. Fortunately for Webb he married Anne a niece of Jones, who on Jones’s death received for themselves & their children a sizeable sum of £3,000 plus earlier debts owed by #CharlesI & his Queen.

Cloud over #Greenwich.
But still architectural feast for the eyes.

The nine-panelled compartmentalised ceiling in the Gallery at Chiswick House is based on the ceiling by #InigoJones at the #BanquetingHouse in Whitehall. The boses in the form of masks come from The Queen’s House at Greenwich. The painting in the central oval by #SebastianoSerlio is copied from #Veronese’s ‘The Defence of Scutari’ at the Doge’s Palace in Venice. In the rectangular panels Turkish prisoners of war are shown with hands bound and chained to walls.

Brilliant day in Greenwich. Finally got a good picture of the spiral stair case with no one in it

Happy birthday, Inigo Jones.

Staircase, built between 1616 and 1635, at The Queen's House, Greenwich by Inigo Jones.
The building, was commissioned by Queen Anne of Denmark in 1616. These are the first 'cantilevered' [centrally unsupported] stairs in England, copying a Venetian model.

The evolution of the Chiswick #Sphinx. The sphinx today at Chiswick were copied from a 1st century #RomanSphinx (photo 1) which had been brought back to England by none other than Thomas Howard, 21st Earl of Arundel, the patron of #InigoJones. The sphinx was copied and given a partner by the Italian sculptor #GiovanniBattistaGuelfi (who had been working on the #PomfretMarbles) who then gave the design (slightly embellished) to #RichardBoyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington. Stone sphinx were carved by Guelfi with lead sphinxes of this design produced by #JohnCheere to symbolically guard the front and rear of the villa (temple- photo 2). Lord Burlington or #WilliamKent then gave the design to #CharlesLennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond at Goodwood House at Carne’s Seat (photo 3) and to John and Catherine Parker at Saltram House (photo 4).
The original sphinx (plus its Guelfi companion) on which the Chiswick sphinx are based, are today at the Ashmolean with other examples from the Arundel sculptures and marbles.
The Roman sphinx also appeared on an Oxford Almanack of 1757 showing several of the Arundel Marbles including the Roman sphinx and on the frontispiece of #WilliamHogarth’s ‘Analysis of Beauty’.

My favourite photograph of the stone #sphinxes in the gardens at Chiswick House, taken around 20 years ago. They are based on a 1st century Roman sphinx which was originaly owned by the patron of the Stuart architect #InigoJones, Thomas Howard, the 21st Earl of Arundel. It was copied and embellished by the sculptor #Guelfi who carved sphinxes for #LordBurlington. Lead sphinxes were produced by #JohnCheere. The Roman sphinx is today in the Ashmolean Museum. It appears in the frontispiece of #Hogarth’s ‘Analysis of Beauty’ and an Oxford almanac for 1757. @Chiswick_House @AshmoleanMuseum
