Thirty years ago this moment, Hurricane #Iniki was tracking south of Hawaii in a midst of a period of rapid intensification (looks T6.0 but officially 90 kt). Although there’s an obvious trough interaction on satellite, it was predicted to continue west due to persistence/climo.
