You have to be impressed with the mechanics of beetle flight. Big membranous wings that fold under hard, protective elytra. It does make them a little slow and vulnerable in flight, but it does mean they have some protection on the ground. #ChristmasBeetle #insectflight

Can any melittologist or entomologist confirm how many times on avg a #carpenterbee #xylocopa (specifically) beats its wings every minute (say while hovering/foraging)? Not able to find it in openaccess papers. I’ve data for other #bees #insectflight #wingbeat #wingbeatfrequency
