The #opportunity of visiting the historic city of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, was significant in many ways, and the memories will last forever. Sincere gratitude to the Chairman, House Committee on Insurance and Actuarial Matters, Hon. Ahmadu Usman Jaha FCIB and the Commissioner for Insurance/Chief Executive Officer of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Olusegun Ayo Omosehin and the combined participants from the Committee and the Commission who made the retreat exciting and insightful.
The major takeaways were:
1. The desire of the Commission to leverage the influence of the Honourable Members in their respective constituencies towards increasing insurance awareness and education and deepening insurance penetration across Nigeria
2. The expectations of the Committee to see the Commission effectively implement the provisions of NIIRA 2025 and ensure a high level of compliance from the operators with regards to claims payments, minimum capital requirements, and corporate governance.
3. The impressive responses of the Honourable Members to the recent payment of claims amounting to US$55m to a single policyholder by eighteen (18) insurance companies was well received by the Commissioner and his team on behalf of the insurance industry.
4. The renewed vigour towards the enforcement of the compulsory classes of insurance, which would largely protect and compensate members of the public, and organisations that promote the public good through their services. NIIRA2025 has identified nine (9) compulsory classes of insurance namely: Third Party Motor, Group Life, Professional Indemnity for Healthcare Professionals, Builders Liability, Occupier Liability, Marine Insurance for Imported Goods, Aviation Insurance, Insurance of Petroleum Tankers and Filling Stations, and Insurance of Government Assets and Employees.
Expectedly, before the retreat, the combined delegation visited the Office of the indefatigable Executive Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum CON mni, and we were received by the Deputy Governor, Umar Kadafur Usman, who shared first hand experiences of resilience, sacrificial leadership and collective responsibility to secure the future for the people. The story of Borno State is the lesson we all need for the realisation of the purpose of the ongoing economic reforms, especially in the insurance industry in Nigeria. Commitment, determination, and growth mindset must define our strategic efforts to implement NIIRA2025.
Next, we went off to one of the oldest palaces in Nigeria to pay homage to the Shehu of Borno, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Dr Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi CFR. He majestically shared the history of the empire and reflected on the impact of leadership in the face of risks caused by human actions and inactions.
The return of peace to Borno State is critical to the financial inclusion provisions in NIIRA2025, especially for small business owners gradually returning to their commercial activities and needing to secure their future.
At the Commission, we are committed to working in collaboration with relevant authorities across different levels of government to deliver the true value of insurance to diverse stakeholders.
