Last week, we joined @MissingVoicesKE to mark the #InternationalDayoftheVictimsofEnforcedDisappearances under the theme “Victims First. Actions Now.” The day was a powerful reminder that the voices of victims and families are at the center of the call for truth, justice, accountability, and reparations. With Kenya still lacking a specific law criminalizing enforced disappearance, urgent legal reforms are needed.

On the #InternationalDayoftheVictimsofEnforcedDisappearances, protesters in Islamabad urged Pakistan to sign and ratify the UN convention on enforced disappearances, enact a standalone law criminalising the practice, and replace the existing inquiry commission with an independent, victim-centred body. They also called for justice and redress for thousands of families who continue to search for missing loved ones.

To the colonizer, gender offers no protection. In its eyes, it does not matter whether you are a woman or a man, a student or an elder, if you are Baloch you can be made to disappear. For decades, the Baloch people have endured enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detention, intimidation and other forms of direct and indirect violence. Enforced disappearance has become a weapon of colonial control used to silence voices, spread fear, conceal abuses and keep an entire people under constant pressure. Today, Baloch youth, students, intellectuals, activists, women and children remain vulnerable to this machinery of repression. The growing abduction of Baloch women and girls including Mahjabeen, Khadija, Habiba, Nasrena and many others makes clear that even the home is no longer a place of safety. If you are Baloch, no age, gender, profession or social position guarantees protection.
The Baloch people no longer need to be told what this violence is or why it persists. They have lived through it, witnessed it and recognized the machinery behind it. They know that enforced disappearances do not occur in isolation, they exist alongside militarization, surveillance, intimidation, collective punishment, arbitrary detention and political repression methods used to control an entire people. When a person is disappeared, the violence does not end with their abduction. It is carried into the homes of their families, into their communities and into the lives of those left behind, forcing them to live with fear, uncertainty and unanswered questions.
On this International Day, the world must look beyond statistics and recognize the human lives behind every disappearance. Every disappeared person has a name, a family, a history and a right to return. Families have the right to know the truth about their loved ones and those responsible for these crimes must be held accountable. Silence cannot become acceptance and disappearance cannot become a permanent condition. The Baloch people will continue to speak out and demand the return of every disappeared person. Force may suppress a voice, but it cannot erase a people’s memory, identity or determination to seek justice.

Every year on 30 August, the world observes the #InternationalDayOfTheVictimsOfEnforcedDisappearances, a #UnitedNations observance dedicated to raising awareness about one of the gravest violations of human rights—the arrest, detention, abduction or disappearance of individuals against their will, followed by a refusal to disclose their fate or whereabouts.
—————————————————-
An #EnforcedDisappearance does not affect only one individual. It leaves behind an entire family trapped in uncertainty—unable to mourn, unable to move forward, and often spending years searching for answers. The psychological trauma of not knowing whether a loved one is alive or dead can continue across generations.
The issue remains a painful reality in different parts of the world. Families and #HumanRights organizations have documented concerns relating to enforced disappearances in countries affected by conflict, political repression, insurgency and weak rule of law. From parts of South Asia, including concerns repeatedly raised regarding Balochistan, to regions of the Middle East, Latin America, Africa and other conflict-affected areas, families continue to seek truth, justice and accountability.
—————————————-
#Balochistan has become an especially prominent symbol in discussions about missing persons, with families and rights groups repeatedly demanding credible investigations and information about those who have disappeared. Such allegations must be addressed through transparent, impartial and lawful mechanisms that protect both human rights and due process.
———————————————
As a doctor, I often reflect that healing is impossible without acknowledging pain. The same principle applies to societies. Truth is the first step towards healing, and accountability is essential for lasting peace.
On this day, we remember not only those who disappeared, but also the mothers, fathers, spouses and children who continue to wait.
No family should have to live without knowing the fate of a loved one.

As the world marks the #InternationalDayoftheVictimsofEnforcedDisappearances on #AmnestyReads, @irunguhoughton argues that justice cannot be complete while survivors and their families remain excluded from efforts to deliver truth, accountability, and redress.
Despite verified cases, court rulings, and public commitments to address past abuses, many victims of enforced disappearances are still waiting for recognition, reparations, and justice.
