#Definition
Intussusception is a condition where a segment of the intestine folds into an adjacent part of the intestine, leading to bowel obstruction.
#Epidemiology
•Common Age Group: Typically affects children between 6 months and 3 years old.
•Gender: More common in males than females.
#Etiology
•Children: Often idiopathic, but can be associated with viral infections (e.g., adenovirus), Meckel’s diverticulum, or intestinal polyps.
•Adults: Often secondary to a pathological condition such as a tumor.
#Clinical_Presentation
•Symptoms:
•Sudden onset of intermittent, severe abdominal pain
•Vomiting (initially non-bilious, becoming bilious as obstruction persists)
•“Currant jelly” stools (mixture of blood and mucus)
•Lethargy and irritability
•Physical Exam:
•Sausage-shaped mass in the abdomen
•Abdominal distension and tenderness
#Diagnosis
•Ultrasound: Preferred initial imaging modality, showing a target or “doughnut” sign.
•X-ray: May show signs of bowel obstruction.
•Contrast Enema: Both diagnostic and therapeutic, showing a coil spring or meniscus sign.
#Treatment
•Non-Surgical:
•Air or contrast enema reduction, which is successful in most pediatric cases.
•Surgical:
•Indicated if enema reduction fails, if there are signs of peritonitis, or if a pathological lead point is suspected (more common in adults).
#Complications
•Bowel Necrosis: Due to prolonged obstruction and compromised blood supply.
•Perforation: Especially if the condition is not promptly treated.
•Recurrence: Possible even after successful reduction, necessitating close follow-up.
#Prognosis
•Children: Generally good with prompt diagnosis and treatment.
•Adults: Depends on underlying cause and timely intervention.
