#INV 2상 냉각을 이해해보자.
AI 데이터센터에서 요즘 가장 중요한 문제 중 하나는 “열”이다. GPU가 점점 강해질수록 전기도 많이 먹고, 열도 엄청나게 많이 난다. 쉽게 말하면 AI 서버는 “엄청 뜨거운 전자레인지 수천 개”가 한 건물 안에서 동시에 돌아가는 것과 비슷하다.
그래서 필요한 게 냉각 기술이다.
기존 방식은 보통 공기나 물로 식힌다.
공기 냉각은 선풍기로 식히는 느낌이다.
하지만 GPU가 너무 뜨거워지면 선풍기만으로는 부족하다.
일반 액체 냉각은 물이나 냉각액이 뜨거운 칩 옆을 지나가면서 열을 가져가는 방식이다. 이건 뜨거운 물건에 차가운 물을 흘려보내는 것과 비슷하다.
그런데 액체 2상 냉각은 한 단계 더 강하다.
핵심은 이거다.
액체가 열을 먹고 기체로 바뀌면서, 엄청난 열을 한 번에 가져간다. 라면 끓일 때를 생각하면 쉽다. 물이 끓으면 수증기가 된다.
이때 물은 단순히 따뜻해지는 것보다 훨씬 많은 열을 흡수한다. 액체 2상 냉각도 비슷하다. 차가운 특수 냉각액이 GPU 근처로 간다. GPU의 뜨거운 열을 먹는다.
냉각액 일부가 기체로 바뀐다. 기체가 열을 들고 밖으로 이동한다. 다시 식어서 액체가 된다. 이 과정을 계속 반복한다.
그래서 이름이 2상 냉각이다. 여기서 “2상”은 두 가지 상태라는 뜻이다.
액체 상태 + 기체 상태 즉, 액체였다가 기체가 되고, 다시 액체로 돌아오는 방식이다.
왜 이게 중요할까?
AI 서버는 앞으로 더 뜨거워진다.
NVIDIA GPU, AI Factory, 고밀도 랙이 늘어날수록 기존 공기 냉각이나 일반 수냉만으로는 한계가 올 수 있다.
결국 데이터센터의 병목은 GPU만이 아니다.
전력 + 냉각 + 공간 + 효율
이 4개가 진짜 병목이다.
여기서 Accelsius가 주목받는 이유가 나온다.
Accelsius는 Innventure $INV가 만든 회사로, 2상 direct-to-chip liquid cooling 기술을 데이터센터용으로 밀고 있다. Accelsius는 Innventure가 2022년에 출범시킨 회사이며, Accelsius의 기술은 Nokia Bell Labs에서 나온 기술 기반으로 알려져 있다.
쉽게 말하면, 서버 전체를 물에 담그는 방식이 아니라 가장 뜨거운 칩에 직접 냉각액을 보내서 열을 빼앗는 방식이다.
Accelsius는 Jacobs와 함께 10MW 데이터센터 기준의 2상 direct-to-chip 냉각 레퍼런스 디자인을 공개했고, 그 분석에서는 단상 냉각 대비 연간 OpEx 최대 35% 절감, 5년 TCO 12% 절감, 같은 전력 범위 안에서 GPU를 5% 더 운영할 수 있는 가능성을 제시했다.
이게 중요한 이유는 단순하다.
AI 데이터센터에서 전기는 곧 돈이다.
냉각 비용을 줄이면 마진이 좋아지고,
같은 전력으로 GPU를 더 돌릴 수 있으면 매출 기회가 커진다.
또 Johnson Controls도 2025년 10월 Accelsius에 전략적 투자를 발표했다. Johnson Controls는 2상 냉각이 액체에서 기체로 바뀌는 phase change를 활용해 더 효율적으로 열을 제거하고 에너지 소비를 줄일 수 있다고 설명했다.
내가 보는 포인트는 이거다.
AI 시대에는 GPU를 많이 가진 기업만 이기는 게 아니다.
GPU를 더 차갑게, 더 조밀하게, 더 싸게, 더 안정적으로 돌릴 수 있는 기업도 같이 커진다. 그래서 2상 냉각은 단순한 부품 기술이 아니라 AI 인프라의 병목을 해결하는 핵심 기술 중 하나가 될 수 있다.
