The entire "save the agent's livelihood" argument is absurd.
A middleman's career cannot be subsidized by the premiums of crores of retail investors.
If a distribution model only survives by cheating the consumer to fund high commissions, it deserves to be regulated out of existence.

Care Health issued a policy in my brother’s name while he was not even in the country, and later unilaterally cancelled my late father’s insurance based on instructions from their partner SBFC Finance (NBFC) for double recovery of the loan — despite premiums already being debited from the loan account.
This had placed an unnecessary financial & emotional burden on a grieving family.
Consumers must stay alert: always verify consent, documents, & policy status.

But when it comes to extracting more from policyholder, the deadline of 1 Jan 2027 is put for introducing mandatory co-pay.
In this question on livelihoods of agents and brokers, the fact that it runs on the premiums of crores of Indians is often forgotten.

If you actually read both I and II of the consultation paper put out by IRDAI, it gives all the evidence needed by anybody to show that insurance in India is broken. There is market failure and the industry does not work in consumer interest.
