#Ethiopia: Between two peace treaties: #Irob community confronts plight, looming displacement https://t.co/5SOdgy73Pu The Irob community, comprising around 60,000 individuals with an estimated 35,000 residing in semi-arid mountainous areas along the Ethiopian-#Eritrean border, faces an uncertain future stemming from the #Algiers treaty signed in 2000 after the Ethio-Eritrean border war and the failure to fully implement the Pretoria peace accord that ended the #Tigray war in 2022. For generations, this remote, rugged region has served as the traditional homeland for the Irob people, who have primarily sustained themselves through agricultural activities. However, their way of life has been disrupted by the 1998-2000 Ethio-Eritrean border war and the recently ended Tigray war, posing significant challenges to their continued presence in the area. Four years ago, Eritrean forces assumed control over substantial portions of the Irob district, resulting in the isolation of the community from the broader Tigray region due to security concerns. Consequently, the Irob people have endured hardships, including limited access to essential services such as electricity and banking facilities, exacerbating their precarious situation. Despite the Pretoria accord's call for Eritrean troop withdrawal, their continued presence in the Irob district exacerbates the community's difficulties. Eritrean forces justify their occupation under the Algiers agreement, signed in 2000 to delineate post-war borders. This has led to the enforced division of Irob land and families, causing significant displacement. Community leaders, such as Nigusse Hagos and Yoseph Adayu, stress the need for inclusive peace agreement implementations that consider the Irob's unique identity and circumstances. They advocate for dialogues involving all stakeholders to ensure the community's rights and survival. Calls for international intervention highlight the need for a peaceful resolution to protect the Irob community and maintain regional stability.
