I've been feeling kinda out of it today (case of the Mondays, I guess), so I figured a rewatch of one of my fave zombie movies with one of my fave wrestlers (still surprised by how badass Maryse was in it 💗) might help.

#IsleOfTheDead (1945) :
The superstitious tale of the vorvolaka and plague forms an anti-horror flick that aims to resemble a horror film.
Isle of the Dead is labeled a horror film but is actually not. Having Boris Karloff in the lead role was a ploy; using the reference of the ancient horror legend vorvolaka was a ploy, and then there was the epidemic, again tricked by the wind. The film is set during the Balkan War period, adding some realism to the story, but the second half doesn’t seem credible. General Pherides and reporter Oliver visit the Isle of the Dead to pay respects to the general’s deceased wife, but the tomb is destroyed. Moments later, they hear a lady’s voice singing and meet an archeologist who reveals that he has destroyed all tombs to gather antiques. The two are invited to spend the night at his house, and the next day, one of them is found dead. The cause of death is plague, and now everyone must be quarantined on the isle to prevent the plague from spreading. There is one more death, and then the general begins to doubt the tale of the vorvolaka, which is said to take the form of a young lady, Thea. Now, he must keep everyone under watch to stop the disease from spreading and also save everyone’s life. The climax features too many deaths, or rather, killings, but the reason behind them is something else. Too many coincidences and sudden decisions spoil the reliability of the finale, causing this film to lose its merits. Mark Robson’s direction was decent to average, and frankly, I didn’t find myself invested in the film. Karloff as the General had a horrifying look, which is unsuitable for an army official. Ellen Drew as Thea was gorgeous, and Helene Thimig as Kyra was very good. The rest of the cast was also passable while the technical aspects succeeded in creating an atmospheric feel. Overall, it is a decent one-time watch that didn’t reach its actual potential and felt somewhat lacking.
