Co-op Week is here! As a member-owned co-operative, we do business differently and over the next week, we’ll be celebrating some of the things that make us unique. Follow along to learn more. #ItsACoopThing

As 2025 draws to a close, we extend our thanks to everyone who joined us in celebrating the International Year of Co-operatives and this year’s theme: ‘Co-operatives Build a Better World’. #IYC2025 #ItsACoopThing

FCL’s co-operative members are divided into 5 districts. Three directors represent each district, and each serves a three-year term. The directors then elect a president/chair and a vice-chair. The board arranges for and supervises the management of FCL. #IYC2025 #ItsACoopThing

Co-ops host annual meetings to provide financial and operational updates to their members. During this meeting, there is often an election to select members to serve on the co-op’s board. #IYC2025 #ItsACoopThing

Each co-op is governed by a board of directors elected by, and accountable to, its members. These representatives are responsible for setting policies and making decisions that guide the overall direction of the co-op. #IYC2025 #ItsACoopThing

One aspect differentiating a co-op from other businesses is the principle of democratic member control. Members have a say on how the co-op is run through activities like voting at the annual meeting and running for the board of directors. #IYC2025 #ItsACoopThing

We’re proud of our co-operative roots. By working together and being grounded in our values, the Co-operative Retailing System has remained strong and resilient in a rapidly evolving world. This strength will help us meet the challenges ahead. #IYC2025 #ItsACoopThing

The Co-operative Retailing System is proudly Canadian. Our business is driven by the idea that working together makes us stronger and giving back to the communities we serve is at the core of who we are. Co-operatives build a better world. #IYC2025 #ItsACoopThing

Without members, a co-op isn’t a co-op. Members help guide the organization and earn some great benefits in the process. If you’re interested in learning more or would like to join, check this out: https://t.co/lpYF1KyLMF #IYC2025 #ItsACoopThing

We’re celebrating Co-op Week! Did you know it’s also the International Year of Co-operatives? It’s a time to celebrate the impact co-operatives make across the world and right here at home. Check out some unique ways to celebrate: https://t.co/UzW8N9qTDA #IYC2025 #ItsACoopThing

According to @CoopsCanada, there are more than 600 co-ops in Canada, employing 194,000 employees and earning over $108 billion in annual revenue. #IYC2025 #ItsACoopThing

Some examples of co-operatives include a worker co-op, a structure in which employees own and self-manage the business, and a producer co-op, where members pool their resources to reduce costs and benefit from collective marketing advantages. #IYC2025 #ItsACoopThing

A co-op is more than just a grocery store or a gas bar. A co-operative is a group of people working together to meet their common economic, social or cultural needs, and who are guided by the 7 Co-operative Principles that we’ve previously shared. #IYC2025 #ItsACoopThing

The final Co-operative Principle is concern for community. Co-ops work to improve the quality of life in the communities where they operate. This includes working to address a variety of issues with the goal of long-term community sustainability. #IYC2025 #itsacoopthing

FCL is an example of co-operation among co-operatives. We’re the result of local Co-ops working together to establish a co-operative wholesaler to serve their needs. #IYC2025 #itsacoopthing

Co-operative Principle 6 involves co-operation among co-operatives. Co-ops proactively work with other co-operatives to build support networks and achieve common goals. #IYC2025 #itsacoopthing

FCL contributes to co-operative education and training in many ways, including the development of educational material for Co-op board members and through partnerships with @coopstudies and @Coops_First. #IYC2025 #itsacoopthing

The fifth Co-operative Principle is education, training and information. Co-ops offer education and provide training for the betterment of their employees, members and communities. #IYC2025 #itsacoopthing

Many unique co-operative associations make up the Co-operative Retailing System. These Co-ops are distinct businesses that operate independently, which is why you need a membership for each Co-op association to realize the full benefits of membership. #IYC2025 #itsacoopthing

The fourth principle that sets co-ops apart from other organizations is autonomy and independence. Co-ops are self-governing and self-reliant. They make decisions based on their members’ needs and interests. #IYC2025 #itsacoopthing
